It’s actually very methodical and mathematical based on clinical research that has demonstrated the “sweet spot” margin - how much skin do we need to take to get a high clearance rate and how little can we take so that we don’t have too large of a defect to repair? put another way, you could see 10 dermatologists for the same lesion and as long as all of them are following the same guidelines, they will all remove the same amount of tissue and have about the same length of repair. Melanoma is rare in children, with only about 300–400 cases diagnosed in the United States each year. But because it’s uncommon, pediatric melanoma is often diagnosed at more advanced stages. One reason? Melanoma in kids can look different than it does in adults. The traditional ABCDEs of melanoma still matter, but pediatric melanomas may also follow modified pediatric ABCD criteria: • A = amelanotic (pink or red instead of dark) • B = bleeding or bump • C = color uniformity • D = de novo or any diameter Bottom line: if a spot on your child’s skin is changing, bleeding, growing, or just doesn’t seem right, don’t ignore it. Indoor Tanning = increased risk of developing skin cancer, more wrinkles, less skin firmness, age spots, not a healthy source of vitamin D, and not “safer than the sun.” Tell everyone. Especially young people. Tanning salons will even give out misleading information about risk to consumers.
