The oral documentation of family history is something to be passed down and appreciated for the richness it brings to understanding our heritage and where we come from.

My grandfather, Joseph Payne, migrated from Greenville, Alabama, shortly after graduating high school. Alongside his wife (my grandmother, Odis), they moved to Albion, Michigan, in search of work and better opportunities in the North. Other family members also made their way from Alabama during that period.

When he first arrived in Albion he worked in construction. After a few years working in construction, he decided to pursue openings in the automotive industry. His first interview was at The Malleable in Albion, where he was offered a job on the spot. But he had also heard that General Motors in Lansing was hiring, so he decided to explore that opportunity as well. After traveling to Lansing, he was offered a position as a line operator and that was the beginning of his long career with GM. For over 30 years, he commuted daily from Albion to Lansing, rain or shine, sleet or snow. Over the years, he worked his way up from line operator to trainer, eventually becoming a Supervisor and Project Advisor.

My grandmother worked for many years as a CNA, but her work ethic started much earlier helping on the family farm and picking cotton back in Alabama. They built a life in Albion, where their children my dad, aunt, and uncle all went through the Albion Public School system and graduated from Albion Senior High School.

One thing my grandfather always says is, “A man will work, do, and provide for his family.” Their move from South to North was a way to live out that belief. This is just one of the many stories I’ve learned through conversations with my elders.

I encourage everyone to spend time connecting with their family and listening to the stories that shaped them.

Happy Juneteenth! 🖤

My biggest goal for the 10k was simple: to show up and be present. In the past, I’ve often found myself overanalyzing how my performance looked how fast I ran, or how strong I appeared. But this time, I wanted to shift my focus.

Instead of chasing a personal best or perfect ex*****on, I chose to acknowledge the quiet strength it takes just to start to align with where I am in training and honor my body. There’s something powerful about deciding that showing up as you are is more than enough.♥️

According to the calendar, Spring has begun. With Spring being a metaphor for new beginnings, renewal, growth, and rebirth…I challenge US to take a look inside and see where we sit to align with what’s ahead.

Keep in mind, where you are today sets the tone for where you may be tomorrow but it doesn’t define you. This is why springtime could be your season to redirect and get connected with a better version of yourself. Someone who had a cold winter, could still have a good spring, and a hot summer. Don’t let that go over your head. ☀️

🏃🏾‍♀️Get started and get going in a new season. While you’re at it you could gear up in ‘s newest collection.

*Add Published Researcher to my Bio👩🏾‍🔬🥼
I’m proud to share that my research on the Borg Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE) scale and its effect on heart rate response in group cycling has been published in Research Directs in Health Sciences!

This study began as my independent research project during my master’s program at Western Michigan University, where I explored whether a detailed explanation of the RPE scale impacts exercise intensity and heart rate regulation. My initial findings laid the foundation for this project, which was later expanded and continued in collaboration with fellow researchers.

Our results suggest that a simple visual reference may be just as effective as a full explanation, offering insights into how coaches and instructors can guide participants in group exercise settings more efficiently.

🔗Check it out, link in my bio.

I’d love to hear your thoughts. How do you approach effort perception in training?

Yesterday was a reminder of how important it is to manage and prioritize your mental health. The Mind Over Matter event was a powerful reflection of intimate storytelling and the common themes so many of us experience. While the event focused on entrepreneurs, I can bet that many others regardless of profession deal with the same struggles: feeling lost in work, feeling guilty about taking time for yourself, struggling to set boundaries with colleagues and loved ones, experiencing burnout, and needing to consistently fuel your body, move, and rest.

For a while, feeling out of alignment made me believe I’d never be the same or become a better version of myself again. But you know what? I’m so happy I proved that negative voice wrong. The ebbs and flows of life have become my norm again. I forgot how dynamic I was. I forgot how intelligent I was. I forgot that labels don’t define me. But here I am feeling like her again. It’s like my whole sense of self had to wake up again.

To those quietly fighting similar battles, I pray you stay hopeful and keep chasing the light.
