PCOS is one of the most common hormonal conditions, yet many people don’t realize it can look very different from person to person.

As a family physician, I want women to know: you don’t have to fit a stereotype to deserve an evaluation.

Persistent acne, unwanted facial or body hair, hair thinning, irregular periods, or difficulty becoming pregnant can all be pieces of the puzzle. These symptoms do not automatically mean PCOS, but they are worth discussing with a healthcare professional.

Black women may face delays in diagnosis when symptoms are normalized or attributed to other causes. Knowing what to look for—and when to ask questions—can help you advocate for your health.

Which one of these have you heard dismissed as stress: exhaustion, painful periods, brain fog, or sleep changes?

Heavy periods are often brushed off as “normal,” but when they start shaping your schedule, your clothing choices, or your energy, it’s worth paying closer attention.

Uterine fibroids are one of the most common causes of heavy menstrual bleeding, and they disproportionately affect Black women—often earlier, larger, and more symptomatic.

Common signs can include:
• Very heavy or prolonged periods
• Pelvic pressure or bloating
• Frequent urination
• Fatigue or low iron levels

Many people live with these symptoms for years without realizing there are options for evaluation and treatment.

If this sounds familiar, it’s not something to ignore or normalize. It’s a conversation to have.

Save this post, share it with someone who needs it, and reach out to a clinician if symptoms are affecting your quality of life.

Many women are told they're stressed, burned out, or simply "getting older."

And while those things can be true, they aren't always the whole story.

Perimenopause can begin years before menopause, often while you're still having regular periods. The symptoms aren't always what people expect.

Sleep changes.

Brain fog.

Mood shifts.

Changes in your cycle.

Feeling hotter than everyone else in the room.

Too often, women spend years wondering what's wrong before realizing there may be a biological explanation for what they're experiencing.

Understanding perimenopause isn't about labeling every symptom.

It's about recognizing patterns, asking questions, and knowing when it's worth having a conversation with your healthcare professional.

Which symptom surprised you the most?

The nutrition industry loves "new."

The evidence loves consistency.

While social media debates detoxes, cleanses, carnivore diets, and the latest wellness trends, two eating patterns continue to stand out:

✔ Mediterranean

✔ DASH

Both emphasize vegetables, fruit, beans, whole grains, healthy fats, and sustainable habits—not food fear.

And despite what many people think, healthy eating doesn't require abandoning your culture or favorite foods.

Black-eyed peas. Greens. Lentils. Fish. Whole grains.

Many traditional foods already fit the pattern.

Save this post for your next grocery trip and share it with someone considering their next "reset."
