Origin: Painted in the late 19th century (c. 1893) by the Russian Realist painter Nikolai Kasatkin, a prominent member of the Peredvizhniki (The Wanderers) movement.
The Story: Kasatkin was known for his socially conscious art that highlighted the struggles of the working class and peasantry. This heartbreaking painting depicts two young peasant children—a boy kneeling and a smaller girl standing—mourning alone at a freshly dug dirt grave. The desolate, barren landscape and the crude wooden crosses emphasize the bleak reality, crushing poverty, and fragility of Russian peasant life during this era. The painting serves as a somber reflection on grief and the uncertain fate of the orphaned children left behind.
