βοΈ Natural Hair Care Tips for Summer
Summer heat, sun exposure, sweat, chlorine, and humidity can all affect natural hair. Here are some simple ways to keep your curls healthy, hydrated, and thriving all season long:
1. Prioritize Moisture
The sun can dry out natural hair quickly. Use a water-based leave-in conditioner and seal in moisture with an oil or butter.
Try the LOC or LCO method:
* Liquid (water or leave-in conditioner)
* Oil
* Cream
2. Wear Protective Styles
Protective styles help reduce manipulation and moisture loss.
Great summer options:
* Box braids
* Twists
* Cornrows
* Bantu knots
* Wigs (with proper scalp care)
Avoid keeping styles in too longβ6 to 8 weeks is usually best.
3. Protect Your Hair from the Sun
Just like your skin, your hair can suffer from UV damage.
* Wear hats or scarves when outdoors for extended periods.
* Use hair products with UV protection when possible.
4. Deep Condition Weekly
Heat and humidity can leave hair feeling dry and brittle.
Use a deep conditioner:
* Once a week for most hair types
* Twice a week if your hair feels especially dry
Focus on products with:
* Aloe vera
* Honey
* Shea butter
* Avocado oil
5. Keep Your Scalp Clean
Sweat, sunscreen, and product buildup can clog follicles.
* Cleanse regularly with a gentle sulfate-free shampoo.
* Use a scalp scrub or clarifying shampoo once a month if needed.
6. Protect Hair While Swimming
Chlorine and salt water can strip moisture from your strands.
Before swimming:
1. Wet your hair with clean water.
2. Apply leave-in conditioner.
3. Wear a swim cap if possible.
After swimming:
* Rinse immediately.
* Follow up with a moisturizing conditioner.
7. Avoid Excessive Heat Styling
Summer is the perfect time to embrace your natural texture.
Limit:
* Flat irons
* Blow dryers
* Curling wands
If you use heat, always apply a heat protectant first.
8. Sleep on Satin or Silk
Cotton pillowcases can pull moisture from your hair.
Use:
* A satin bonnet
* Silk scarf
* Satin pillowcase
9. Stay Hydrated
Healthy hair starts from within.
* Drink plenty of water daily.
* Eat foods rich in vitamins A, C, D, E, iron, and omega-3 fatty acids.
10. Trim When Needed
Summer activities can lead to split ends.
Signs you may need a trim:
* Excessive tangling
* Knots at the ends
* Rough or uneven ends
β¨ Summer Natural Hair Reminder: Moisture, protection, and gentle handling are the keys to retaining length and keeping curls soft, defined, and healthy all season long.
