New research is raising serious questions about the hidden privacy risks inside everyday technology — including the Wi-Fi routers already sitting in millions of homes.

Researchers from Germany’s Karlsruhe Institute of Technology found that Wi-Fi signals can potentially be analyzed to recognize individuals based on how their bodies interact with wireless signals. Using machine learning, the team studied beamforming feedback information — data normally used by routers to improve connection quality — and discovered that movement patterns could create unique signal changes.

In controlled testing, their system was reportedly able to identify participants with extremely high accuracy, showing that ordinary wireless signals may reveal far more about people inside a space than most users realize.
