Weāve all been there! You want to be a team player & jump in to help outā¦but is it a trap?? Hereās how to think about those additional work requests: 1ļøā£ How important is it? Get clear on how important and urgent this is to your boss (or the team)! Itās easy to assume that every request from a manager or senior leader is important and urgent. 2ļøā£ What exactly is the ask?? Donāt say yes without clarity. Is it a quick 10-minute win, or will it take hours or days? Make sure you know what youāre committing to. 3ļøā£ What precedent are you setting? Volunteering occasionally = good team player. Saying yes every time = setting a new norm where itās expected. 4ļøā£ Are you tracking your contributions? Document your extra work! That way, you can highlight your efforts during reviews or promotion discussions.
Quick tips to help you become more comfortable & confident speaking up in meetings! ā”ļøPrepare beforehand (you only need a few minutes for this!) ā”ļø Sit in the right spot! Set yourself up for success by placing yourself - literally - within the conversation! ā”ļø Speak ASAP. The longer you wait, the harder it will feel! Say something quick and simple early on (ask a good question!). ā”ļø Lower the bar. If you are someone who worries about not speaking enough, you are likely putting too much pressure on yourself to say the āØperfect⨠thing. Think: progress > perfection.
