Skin care and makeup are often wrapped in the most beautiful packaging to visually entice us to buy but also greenwashed with words like non-toxic, sustainable or vegan but what does it all mean and what are we deliberately turning a blind eye to to adorn ourselves with that latest peptide that promises to brighten our skin or that perfect shade of Barbie pink blush trio that we hope to take our post viral and us to an well maintained endorphin rush for a solid 12 hours? What is the red line for us as consumers? There has been small changes that has happened over the years when it comes to animal cruelty and testing (so now those practices are outsourced to independent research labs) but not we are actually crossing the line to an entirely new territory. To places that holds the highest numbers of skin banks in a place that collecting organs from their own soldiers are not allowed to be done. This takes vegan but as long as it’s human tissue to a very questionable and grotesque technology.
Don’t get me wrong, in my past life I studied bio-technology for 7 years and even worked in the field. I think it had an amazing promise for medical applications. But “donor” skin for skin care and makeup up crosses many red lines in ethics and in mislabeling a product “vegan”.
I’d love to read your thoughts on this rare video made on beauty. She’s talking about the start of what can become a huge trend in glam-washing products to make profit off in some grotesquely unethical ways.

I’ve been asked to share how I made Surma or khole at home or back in Afghanistan to use in my kit on some special shoots that required a certain mystery and inspired me spiritually. Using and making this eye liner ks a spiritual ritual. It’s used to ward off evil eye 🧿👁️‍🗨️🪬making a video@of such a beautiful ritual always felt daunting and to be honest cheapening the entire experience. Finally I found a video worth posting on this subject and technique. I don’t think language is a barrier. It’s such a poetic film that it’s not hard to decipher the actions.

همیشه از زیبایی،خماری، کشیدگی‌، سیاهی مژگانشون قصه‌ها گفته شدچشمهایی که شاید با کشیدن سرمه نمیخواستن رازهاشون لو بره
حالا انگار هر وقت سرمه میکشم، فکر می‌کنم زنی از خیلی دور تو آینه روبه‌روم ایستادهزنی که نمی‌شناسمش، اما نگاهش برام آشناست.
انگار چیزی از او هنوز تو چشم‌های من زندگی میکنه
