Purging is real. It is also the most overused word in skincare, and it is keeping people on products that are quietly wrecking their barrier.

A purge is a timeline, not a feeling. Retinoids speed up turnover. Everything already forming under the surface, the stuff that was going to appear in three weeks, appears in one instead. That is the whole mechanism. Your usual breakouts, arriving early.

Which means it only happens where you already break out. If you are suddenly breaking out along your jaw and you have never broken out along your jaw, that is not a purge. Something is irritating or clogging you, and waiting it out will not fix it.

Stinging, burning, tightness and flaking are not purging. Those are barrier symptoms. A purge does not hurt. If your skin is uncomfortable, the product is too strong, too frequent, or sitting on top of something else that is also too strong.

And it expires. A purge should be clearly improving by week six to eight and finished around twelve. If you are four months in and still breaking out, stop calling it a purge. It is not working, and nobody is coming to tell you that.

One more thing. Only actives that speed up turnover can cause a purge. Retinoids, acids, benzoyl peroxide. Your new moisturizer is not purging you. Your new facial oil is not purging you. That is a reaction, and the answer is to stop, not to push through.

For a real purge, the fix is usually not quitting. It is dropping to two or three nights a week, moisturizing first, and giving it the twelve weeks.

If your lips have a shelf above the border, you did not do that. Someone put it there.

Migration is mostly volume and plane. Product placed too superficially, or too much of it in an area that moves all day, does not stay where it was put. It goes where the movement takes it. That is a decision someone made with a needle, not something your lips did on their own.

Stacking is the other half of it. Filler does not always leave on the manufacturer’s schedule. If you were topped up every six months on the assumption the last round was gone, you may have been building on product that never fully resorbed. Nobody mentioned it, because the top-up was the appointment.

Your anatomy is not the cause. Thin skin, a strong orbicularis oris, a short distance from border to nose. All real, all of it matters. But it is knowable before the needle goes in. Anatomy is a reason to change the plan. It is not a reason the plan failed.

Here is the fixable part. Hyaluronic acid filler dissolves. That is not a reset or a cleanse, it is undoing prior work, and sometimes the right next step is to dissolve, wait, and actually look at the face underneath before anyone adds anything to it.

I will tell you when I think you should dissolve and not refill. That conversation costs me a syringe and I would still rather have it.

This Friday Fav is extra special because it’s Johnny Frisella ! 💚

Today, he’s is playing in the IHSA State Golf Tournament down in Bloomington, and I could not be more excited for him! To see him on this stage, competing alongside his teammate and some incredibly talented golfers, is really exciting! He LOVES the game of golf, loves to compete, and puts so much of his heart into it. There is nothing better than having a front row seat and watching him do what he loves and cheer him on every step of the way!

Please help me wish Johnny the BEST of luck today as he represents Boylan Catholic! ⛳️
