We love the Rockcliffe mansion… Have been there many many times, and never get tired of visiting!
The Rockcliffe Mansion in Hannibal was built in 1900 by a lumber baron at the very peak of Hannibal’s prosperity — and Mark Twain himself was a guest in its parlor. ✨
John Cruikshank Jr. built Rockcliffe Mansion as a statement of arrival — a 13,500-square-foot Beaux-Arts showpiece on the Hannibal bluffs above the Mississippi that announced to anyone passing on the river that Hannibal had money, taste, and ambition.
Mark Twain visited the mansion during his last return to Hannibal in 1902, one of the final times he saw his boyhood town. The house changed hands multiple times after Cruikshank’s death and fell into severe disrepair before a restoration effort saved it in the 1960s. Today it operates as a museum and bed and breakfast, its period interiors preserved in extraordinary detail.
Rockcliffe is one of the finest surviving examples of Gilded Age domestic architecture in Missouri — and most people only know Hannibal as Mark Twain’s hometown, missing this architectural gem entirely. Have you visited Rockcliffe?
