🚨 WHY DREADLOCK EXTENSIONS NEED TO BE REMOVED + REINSTALLED 🚨

I wanted to share this before & after because it is a perfect example of why proper extension maintenance matters!

Dreadlock extensions are a temporary protective style. They are not meant to be installed indefinitely. I recommend having extensions removed and reinstalled around every 3 months, depending on your hair growth, shedding, the size/weight of your extensions, and how your natural hair is doing.

In the BEFORE photo, that large bulge above the extension is severe matting of the natural/shed hair. We naturally shed hair every day. When you have extensions installed, that shed hair can become trapped around the root instead of simply falling away. As your natural hair continues to grow, new growth and shed hair can accumulate, tangle, and eventually become severely matted.

Extensions also add additional weight to your natural hair. The longer they remain installed, the farther the extension can move from the scalp as your hair grows, meaning your newer growth is supporting that weight.

This is why removing your extensions periodically is SO important. It gives us the opportunity to:
🤎 Separate and address your new growth
🤎 Remove accumulated shed hair
🤎 Prevent excessive matting
🤎 Assess the condition of your natural hair
🤎 Assess your scalp and roots
🤎 Give your hair a fresh foundation before reinstalling

Protective style does NOT mean permanent style. Your extensions are meant to protect and give you the length, fullness, and versatility you love while still allowing you to properly care for the natural hair underneath.

At your reinstallation appointment, I assess your scalp, natural hair, and roots before reinstalling your extensions. The goal is to catch potential issues before they become a bigger problem.

🚨 Please don’t wait until your roots look like the BEFORE photo. The goal of regular removal isn’t to fix severe matting after it happens — it’s to help prevent it from getting that far. Beautiful extensions are great.
Healthy natural hair underneath them is the priority.
