With so many protective styles at our disposal in the natural hair community, the two strand twist has a special place in our hearts. Also referred to as mini twists or just twists, two strand twists can be a great way to keep your hair hydrated and healthy in a low manipulated hairstyle. This hairstyle in particular can be worn with ones own hair or with the addition of extensions. Your twist can be adorned in cute hair accessories and styled a multitude of ways as well.

The versatility and simplicity of this hair style is truly endless! Honestly anyone can rock two strand twists of course, but they tend to hold up better on their own without reinforcements on the ends, with textured hair. If your hair is too much on the straight side of the hair spectrum, you will have to expect your hair unraveling.

How To Protect Your TWA for Short Natural Hair Greatness

The TWA or Teeny We**ie Afro is more than just the beginning of one’s natural hair journey. It is a style all on its own. It can be dressed up or down– fro’ed out, sponge curled, finger coiled, twisted or you can just rock your natural curls!  The style choices for TWAs are only limited by your own preferences but what should not be a preference is caring for and protecting your short hair. Make no mistake…short hair needs TLC too! While buns, updos, and braids are traditional ways to protect your ends, with a TWA you do not have that luxury so here are some easy yet effective tips on protecting your TWA or short hair.

1. Protect your short hair at night - satin/silk bonnet or pillowcase

2. Keep your TWA moisturized - Water-based leave-ins or refreshers are excellent for reviving dry hair and moisturized hair always looks and feels great.

3. Deep conditioning & protein treatments - Conditioners are created to combat the effects of shampoos and deep conditioners are thicker and full of nutrients and oils to help bring your hair back from the styling damages it occurred in-between washes and on wash day. Try not to skip it.

4. Seal your ends - Shorter styles do not have to deal with friction from clothing but just the sun, pollutants and the elements are doing harm too so the sealant (usually a natural oil or a cocktail) lends a barrier to assist in keeping them away from those fragile ends so your retain length and have healthier hair.

Women all of the time ask me about the silk press. But do you know what the number one question is that I get asked? It is this: how long does a silk press last?

Well, it depends.  I know that's not the answer you were looking for. However, a silk press normally lasts for two weeks.

It can sometimes last much longer as long as the hair hasn’t been wet down. If your hair comes into any contact with moisture from water, humidity or sweat, it will begin to convert back to its natural curl.

Have you heard about cornrow growth regimens?

The key to understanding hair growth is knowing that all hair types and textures grow but the reason many of us don’t see the growth we desire is because our hair doesn’t retain it due to heat, damaged ends, chemicals and, more commonly, over-manipulation.

Being able to retain the growth your hair experiences is what provides the real results. By tucking away your natural hair in a cornrow style for a couple of weeks, you are less likely to be changing the style or fiddling with your strands. Low manipulation ultimately results in less breakage, which leads to length retention and growth, which is the main idea behind protective styles in general; they “protect” your hair from manipulation.

You may find you need to wash your hair less frequently or the drying process is shorter; and leaving your hair wet won’t cause mildew or any unpleasant smells as is the case when using synthetic hair. You’ll also have more access to your own hair and scalp, making the washing process a lot easier. Another benefit of using cornrows is that there’s no added weight from synthetic hair meaning less tension on your scalp. This is great if you’re trying to combat traction alopecia or want to keep those edges looking fleeky.
