For Mosimanegape Victor Motshabi, known throughout his community as MVM, barbering is about far more than cutting hair. It is about restoring confidence, creating opportunities and giving people a place where they feel seen, heard and valued.

The name MVM comes from the initials of Mosimanegape Victor Motshabi, a name that has become synonymous with compassion, quality service and community care.

MVM Barbershop was established in 2016 after Mosimanegape left his job at KFC following the passing of his father. Unsure of what the future would hold and carrying the responsibility of providing for his family, he decided to turn a skill he had practised since his school days into a business.

"I had been cutting my own hair since I was at school. I realised I could use that talent to build something for myself while helping the people around me." Says Mosimanegape.

What started as a small barbershop in his late father's rundown garage was built with determination, long hours and an unwavering commitment to his community. Although the space was modest, Mosimanegape never lost sight of the bigger picture.

From the beginning, children became the foundation of his business.

"The kids built this business. They kept coming back, told their parents about me and believed in what I was doing." He added.

As word spread, more families began visiting MVM Barbershop, not only because of the quality of the haircuts but because of the kindness they experienced.

Understanding that many households face financial hardship, Mosimanegape chose to put people before profit.

Parents who receive social grants are often allowed to pay on pension day, while children whose families cannot afford a haircut are never turned away.

"If a parent tells me they don't have money today, I tell them to bring the child anyway. If they can pay later, that's fine. If they can't, that's also okay. I never want a child to feel left out because of their family's circumstances."

This spirit of generosity has earned him the trust of the community and transformed his barbershop into more than just a place for grooming. It has become a safe and welcoming space where people can talk openly, share their struggles and leave feeling encouraged.

Today MVM Barbershop offers professional barbering services for men and children while also creating opportunities for others. Mosimanegape mentors aspiring barbers by teaching them the skills of the trade and helping them gain practical experience. His partner plays an equally important role by managing the business finances, offering hair braiding services and expanding what the business can provide to the community.

One of those learning from Mosimanegape is Tshepo Mothibi, who describes the experience as life-changing.

"It's not only about cutting hair. People come here because they need someone to listen. We become friends, brothers and family to many of our clients. Through this journey, I'm learning skills that will help me build my own future while also giving back to the community."

A major turning point for MVM Barbershop came when Letsatsi Borutho Trust supported the business through its Enterprise Development Programme.

After hearing about the Trust's funding opportunities from a community member, Mosimanegape visited the Trust's website, completed the application and hoped for the opportunity to grow his business.

The support enabled him to renovate the barbershop, purchase professional equipment and create a welcoming environment that reflects the quality of service he has always wanted to provide.

"Before the Trust came, this place was just an old garage. People could hardly tell it was a barbershop. Today it's a place people recognise and are proud to visit. The Trust helped me turn my dream into reality."

The investment has not only strengthened the business but has also allowed Mosimanegape to continue serving those who need help most while creating employment opportunities for others within the community.

At the heart of everything he does is a simple philosophy that defines MVM Barbershop.

"We're here to help people. We revive lives, we revive cuts and we revive everything that has to do with your personal life."

Those words are reflected in every haircut, every conversation and every act of kindness that takes place inside the shop. Whether someone walks through the door needing a haircut, encouragement or simply someone to listen, they are welcomed with dignity and respect.
