I asked a photographer:

“What are 5 things you wish makeup artists knew?”

And these were her answers.

Minimal doesn’t mean unfinished.

I still want beautifully perfected skin, but I want it to look like skin.

The lash placement.
The liner.
The lip edge.
The blending.

The little things that might seem insignificant in person but become very obvious once they’re captured in a high resolution image.

After years of working across editorial makeup, fashion beauty and photoshoots, I’ve learnt that some of the most polished makeup is the makeup where every detail has been considered even when the finished result looks effortless. I used to be painstakingly fussy, but after years of pressuring myself it’s conditioned me and my eye for detail, and can now apply those details at greater speed. Still fussy, just without stressing myself out.

Understand lighting and translation of what you are doing, and if you’re unsure, check and adjust…… after all it’s makeup, not a tattoo.

Three things I started doing after 12 years as a makeup artist.

Working intuitively, really looking at what’s in front of me and working with it, rather than trying to force a preconceived idea onto every face.

Speaking up , if something doesn’t look right, or I feel it could work better, I’ve learnt to say it. Respectfully, but I’ll say it.

And embracing restraint, knowing that sometimes the best thing I can do is not add another product, change something unnecessarily, or keep pushing a look that’s already working.

I think experience teaches you that makeup isn’t always about doing more. Sometimes it’s about seeing more, trusting your eye and knowing when to leave something alone.
