PUBLIC VOTING POLL: Permanently place the Speedway Heritage Plaque at the Ekka Grounds! 26/07/2025

Hi everyone!

I’m incredibly honoured to share that I’ll be part of the 2025 Ekka Show with a special display in the Heritage section, running from 9th to 17th August.

The exhibit will feature my book Big Bad Johno, the original Big Blue Scrapbook, a brand new Golden Memorial Plaque, remembering those who passed away on the tracks and historic artifacts—including the sidecar from Neil Gould and Keith Sewell, which once raced against my father, Ron Johnson.

Darren Sonnenberg and I will be there in person on Opening Day, 9th August only, so if you'd like to meet us and chat about the display, that’s the day to come by! If you are unable to join, I will be posting lots of photos of the display.

I’ve also created a public poll to support the recognition of Speedway's powerful heritage at the Ekka Showgrounds. The goal is to permanently place this new golden plaque—honouring nearly 100 years of Speedway history and the lives lost on the Brisbane Exhibition track.

With over 400,000 people attending the Ekka Show in 2024, I'm hoping to raise awareness and support for this important part of Queensland’s history.

Please take a moment to fill out the poll and share the link—your voice can make a real difference.

Thank you to everyone across Australia and around the world who has supported this journey. It’s been challenging, but truly heartfelt.

Barry Newton 🕊️
29.05.2025

It is with great sadness we share the passing of Barry Newton this morning. Just last week, his beloved wife Fay Newton also left this world. After 66 years of marriage, they are now reunited once more.

Barry was a true stalwart of motorcycle racing in Queensland. His dedication to the sport spanned across all disciplines and many decades. Known to many as the ‘Silver Fox,’ Barry was always up for a road trip and a good yarn. His presence and wisdom made a lasting mark on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

He wasn’t just a supporter of the sport—he was part of its fabric. Barry stood side by side with Big Bad Johno (Ron Johnson, Jocelyn Dare’s father) as his right-hand man during some of the most defining years of speedway history in this country.

Barry Commented to Jocelyn in 2021 "I will be remembered in your book, Big Bad Johno, isn't that amazing! Thank you".

Rest in peace, Barry. Thank you for everything you gave to the racing community. Your legacy rides on. 🏁

AUSTRALIAN LEGENDS DENIED ‼️
Ron Johnson and his passenger David Rose (13 years passengers to Ron) deserves to be recognised in the 2025 Hall of Fame - SPEEDWAY AUSTRALIA

His name echoes through the Golden Years of Speedway, yet he still hasn’t received the recognition he truly earned. Its heartbreaking. I have uncovered real, documented evidence of his unmatched contributions—evidence that cements his place as one of the most impactful figures in Australian Speedway history.

Not just a rider but dedicated 45 years of his life. He was Australia Tallest Speedway racer (including Worlds Tallest), wining over 13 titles world wide, one of the Three Kings of sidecars, he was the first to Pioneer Sidecars to South Africa, he also owned the Ipswich Showgrounds and promoted Speedway. With more history that is slowly being found every year.

We respectfully ask that SPEEDWAY AUSTRALIA reconsider their recognition this year, not just for his legacy, but for the sake of preserving the true spirit and history of Speedway.

💬 Comment below if you believe Ron Johnson and David Rose deserves to be in the Hall of Fame.
📢 Demand Speedway Australia they reconsider.
🔁 Share this post with those who remember the Golden Years.

Let’s preserve the true legacy of Speedway and make sure the Hall of Fame honours real talent, real sacrifice, real people, and real history.
