Ever wondered why varicose veins form?

Veins in the legs contain one-way valves that help blood travel back towards the heart. When these valves don't work as effectively, blood can collect in the veins, increasing pressure and causing them to become enlarged and twisted.

So where does movement fit in?

Walking gets the muscles in your legs working, helping blood move back towards the heart. Regular activity and breaking up long periods of sitting or standing are also simple ways to keep more movement in your day.

Movement is part of looking after your general health, but it isn't a treatment for varicose veins themselves. If you're concerned about your veins or symptoms, speak with your GP.

Save this one for your next long day sitting or standing.

Punching, rotating, moving and resetting means there’s plenty happening beyond the gloves. If something keeps bothering you during training, it may be worth having it assessed.

Ever looked at the True Stretch in the clinic and wondered what you’re actually meant to do with it?

The True Stretch provides different points to hold and support yourself while moving through different positions.

At Retrain Health, it may be incorporated into practitioner-guided movement or exercise rehabilitation where appropriate. How it’s used will depend on the individual, their current capacity and what they’re working towards.

In this video, Nat shows the True Stretch in action at our Byron Bay clinic.

A FULL SURF session can mean a lot of repeated paddling, with your shoulders, upper back, trunk and neck all involved before you’ve even caught the wave.

If something keeps bothering you when you’re out in the water, whether it’s your shoulder, neck or back, it may be worth having it assessed rather than just working around it every session.

At Retrain Health in Byron Bay, we can look at what’s happening in the context of your movement, your surfing and what you’re trying to get back to.

Surfers, what usually feels like it’s done the most work after a long session: shoulders, neck or back? Let us know in the comments👇.

Meet Nathan 👋

Nathan is an osteopath at Retrain Health. Before returning to the Northern Rivers, he spent two years working in a ski resort clinic in Canada, where he worked with athletes and built experience across acute injuries and longer term rehabilitation.
At Retrain, Nathan has a particular interest in sports and training injuries, recurring or persistent pain, and exercise rehabilitation.

And when he’s not in the clinic, he’s usually still on the move. You’ll find him surfing, playing soccer or golf, mountain biking, or making the most of the snow when he gets the chance. 🏄‍♂️

Nathan is at our Byron Bay clinic Mondays and Wednesdays, 8am to 5pm.
Want to book with Nathan? You can check his availability online or get in touch with the clinic.

What can later-stage ankle rehab look like?

Nathan takes us through a few examples of exercises that may be used as someone progresses through ankle sprain rehabilitation.

As rehab progresses, exercises can become more challenging depending on the person and what they’re preparing to get back to, whether that involves running, jumping, sport or changes of direction.

*The exercises shown here are examples only. What’s appropriate and when it’s introduced will vary from person to person.

Massage guns: worth using?

They’ve become pretty common in gyms, sports bags and homes, especially before or after training.

Research suggests massage guns may provide a short term increase in range of motion, and plenty of people simply enjoy how they feel.

Does one session sort everything? Is osteopathy mainly hands on treatment? Do you need to know exactly what’s wrong before you book? Not quite.

An osteopathy appointment can involve taking a health history, assessment, hands on care, movement or exercise, advice and education, depending on the individual and what may be appropriate.

And you don’t need to arrive with your own diagnosis. Your osteopath can assess your presentation and discuss the next steps with you.

Meet our osteopaths at Retrain Health in Byron Bay: Dr Nicholas Re, Dr Nathaniel Van Maanen and Dr Nathan Wilson.
