Cigarette ash as colour stain remover. We were hardcore in the 90s. None of this purpose-built, safety-first colour stain remover. We’d slap your colour on nice and heavy, duck out for a quick ciggy, then use the ash to get the colour stains off your forehead, ears and the back of your neck. A little rub, a splash of water, and somehow it worked. Looking back, it’s absolutely wild that this was considered normal. No one questioned it. We all just did it. Would I recommend it now? Absolutely not. But if you trained in a salon in the 80s or 90s, there’s a good chance you remember it too. Those rotten-onion vibes just permeated your entire salon life, and eventually you just made peace with it. And who remembers the off-label uses for perm solution? We used to STRAIGHTEN people’s hair with it. We’d mix cornflour and perm solution into a thick paste, then paint it onto the hair and onto big, thick pieces of cardboard. Did it work? Probably not.
