Providing effective Remedial assessment and treatment of postural problems, injury and pain. I am an experienced Sports Massage Therapist with accomplished competitive athletes with the sensitivity for unparalleled Relaxation Massage.

Providing a fusion of East and West. Remedial Therapy is an assessment and treatment framework incorporating the fundamentals of Physiotherapy. Combined with an understanding of the Eastern philosophy of energetic Qi flow, outcomes beyond expectation are achieved.

Treatment is largely massage based to release tightness, strengthen weakness and promote circulation. My practice also includes Osteopathic Fascial Release techniques, Craniosacral Therapy and Traditional Chinese Medical practices of Cupping, Gua Sha and Dry Needling.

Compensating distortion through the pelvis from a minor leg length discrepancy is the underlying cause of many spinal and lower limb conditions. Medico's and therapists typically do not assess for it. I have been studying this in clinical practice since 2014 and have specialist knowledge identifying and treating the condition. I am referring to structural leg length discrepancy that cannot be adjusted by manipulation.

A short right leg is a dominant genetic trait that came about through evolutionary adaptation increasing the chance of survival during the child rearing years in prehistoric times...we all carry baby on the left hip, freeing the strong right arm for work and defence.

Lymphatic Drainage Post Breast Cancer Surgery

Recent breast cancer case had undergone several surgical procedures to remove lumps from the left breast and lymph nodes from the armpit plus radiation and chemotherapy. Presenting primarily for sports massage two years after treatment, the condition of the chest and shoulders shocked me. Range of motion in the left arm was severely restricted due to scarring under the arm. Holding and guarding patterns through the shoulder and chest were overwhelming. I could not believe the medical system would leave a patient in such a state. She was experiencing painful oedema in the left arm and pain about ribs adjacent to the left breast. She continued to have appointments with a lymphoedema specialist in the medical system but apart from measuring the degree of fluid retention and discussing management of the condition, no actual treatment was offered. A variety of compression sleeves and aids were being used that gave partial relief.

She has an athletic background and is now doing regular gym training and running. She commenced fortnightly Sports Massage for back and lower limbs, and the Shoulder Treatment Protocol and Lymphatic Drainage of chest, left arm and shoulders. The Shoulder Treatment Protocol is a wide ranging treatment penetrating deep into the torso, ribcage and shoulders.

Immediate pain relief in arm and chest. Fluid retention/oedema in the arm was temporarily reduced and would return by the next appointment two weeks later. Where Lymphatic Drainage is normally a gentle process, this was supplemented with deeper more forceful pumping through the axilla under the arm. Partly to remodel surgical scar tissue restricting range of motion but also to encourage lymphatic flow through alternative pathways around the damaged area. This appears to have succeeded because now after one year of this process, oedema has not returned lymphatic drainage has not been necessary for six weeks. This is a current case and treatment continues.

Lymphatic Drainage

Observation during extensive hands on classroom training in the Remedial Diploma at Swinburne University, for individuals not exhibiting symptoms, Lymphatic Drainage (aka Manual Lymphatic Drainage) is merely a slightly relaxing experience. I have come to learn that for those exhibiting symptoms, it is very powerful. It is a treatment performed to reduce fluid retention in a limb or following a surgical procedure or for boosting the immune system. The lymphatic system can be blocked by detritus over time and flushing it out by this manual process improves function. Lymphatic drainage is also useful to reduce inflammation from injury and clear bruising. I have seen bruising cleared away in minutes before my very eyes. Some clients seek out this treatment as a detox process to improve skin tone, health and vitality. After heavy physical activity and sport, pumping out lymphatic nodes accelerates recovery. It is not uncommon for nodal site pumping to be included in general massage treatment provided in my practice. I now have significant experience treating the after effects from breast cancer treatment.

Lymphatic Drainage Process

The lymphatic system is a secondary circulatory system in the body collecting lymphatic fluid from the interstitial spaces of the flesh. Approximately two litres of fluid are collected daily and processed through the lymph nodes before being dumped back into the blood supply at the Terminus, in the subclavien vein in the upper chest. Pumping action for the lymphatic system is fluctuating pressure on nodal sites exerted by bodily movement. Manual Lymphatic Drainage accelerates the normal rate by up to fifty times. It is not uncommon the client will have to take a break halfway through the process to empty their bladder. Massage generally leaves one feeling light and revitalised immediately afterwards. However, where accumulated debris and toxins have been dumped from the nodal sites into the blood supply by lymphatic drainage, the after effects may leave one slightly unwell and sluggish until the Kidneys have had time to clean the blood. There will be a natural urge to drink water to help flush the system.

The process starts by pumping out the Terminus in the chest and progressively working outwards from there through the nodal sites. Lymphatic fluid for the far reaches of the body cannot be pumped through to the Terminus until intervening nodal sites, lymphatic arteries and arterioles have been emptied first. Each nodal site has an associated watershed of capillaries close beneath the skin that collect lymphatic fluid. The location and direction of flow in these watersheds is not necessarily what one might expect. Nodal sites are pumped by broad firm deep rhythmic pumping with the hand. The watersheds are flushed by gentle rhythmic repetitive short strokes encouraging/pushing lymphatic fluids to the nodes. Heavy pressure temporarily blocks capillary action. If the speed of these strokes is too quick, the flow rate is compromised.

It is not always necessary to carry out a full body treatment. A session may focus on an isolated injury or post operative condition where the affected area may be treated repeatedly several times in a session to achieve a satisfactory result. A full body lymphatic drainage requires at minimum 90 minutes.

Lymphatic Drainage Post Breast Cancer Surgery

The most recent of these breast cancer cases had several surgical procedures to remove lumps from the left breast and lymph nodes from the armpit. She also had radiation and chemotherapy treatment. She presented primarily for sports massage two years following treatment. The condition of the chest and shoulders shocked me.

Immediate pain relief resulted in arm and chest. Fluid retention/oedema in the arm was temporarily reduced and would return by the time of the next appointment. Where Lymphatic Drainage is normally a gentle process, this treatment was supplemented with deeper more forceful pumping through the axilla. Partly to remodel surgical scar tissue restricting range of motion but also to encourage lymphatic flow through alternative pathways around the damaged area. This appears to have succeeded because now after one year of this process, no lymphatic drainage treatment has been necessary for six weeks and oedema has not returned. This is a current case and treatment continues.

Lymphatic Drainage to Improve Immune System Function

This is an account of the first Lymphatic Drainage treatment I performed on a client 20 years ago.

A 66 year old self-employed, academic female presents complaining of constant headache over the last four months...she has been “eating” paracetamol analgesics. She also appears to be suffering from a cold. Not being aware of the full extent of other symptoms and at the patient’s request, remedial massage treatment for upper back, shoulder and neck tightness is commenced.

Three consecutive weekly treatments had absolutely no affect. On the fourth weeks I notice she still had the same cold/sniffles when she first attended clinic. I mention that should have cleared up by now. "What's going on?" I ask..."Oh" she says, "I've had constant coughs, colds and allergy reactions for over a year now."

“I'm no expert but they taught me in massage school (Swinburne Uni) that's a sign of a compromised immune system and Lymphatic Drainage can help.” She is sceptical but agrees to undergo a treatment which we proceed to do.

She later advises that on the evening following treatment, all symptoms disappeared. Runny nose, coughs, allergy symptoms and headaches all gone. Complete amazement. Condition resolved entirely. One week later she is still clear of symptoms.
It was only then she told me that when first presenting for Remedial Massage treatment, she also visited her GP for a diagnosis of the condition. The result of the examination...there was no cause for the headaches, they were psychosomatic and she should visit a psychiatrist.

Refusing to accept this she insisted on a referral for a second opinion. For a large fee, examination and testing by a Specialist concluded there was no physical reason for the headaches, they were psychosomatic and she should visit a psychiatrist.

Meanwhile, the humble massage therapist notices she is actually not a very well individual and proposes treatment to boost immunity. Complete fluke but just going by the training. Response to treatment totally beyond expectation. I can only surmise her lymphatic system was blocked and sluggish, Lymphatic Drainage clearing blockages through the system, detoxifying her tissues, eliminated her symptoms. A second treatment was carried out and she has not been sighted since.

I’ve been seeing Simon at Massage Works Dandenong Ranges regularly since 2022, and I honestly can’t recommend him highly enough!

Over the last 30 years, I’ve seen countless massage therapists, physios and osteopaths trying to manage chronic pain, muscular tension and ongoing physical issues, but Simon is by far the best practitioner I’ve ever found. He has an extraordinary depth of knowledge, a genuine gift for what he does, and an almost intuitive understanding of how the body works.

One of the first things Simon identified was that my right leg is slightly shorter than my left, which was contributing to many of my ongoing pain and postural alignment issues. He provided me with a heel lift for my right shoe, and the difference it has made has been enormous! On the occasions I forget to wear it, I really notice the change in my alignment and the discomfort that follows. After decades of seeking treatment, I was amazed that something so simple, yet so significant, had never been picked up before.

What I appreciate most about Simon is that no two treatments are ever the same. He draws on an incredible range of skills and techniques, including remedial massage, deep tissue work, fascial release, craniosacral therapy, Chinese cupping, stretching and more, combining them in whatever way my body needs on that particular day. His approach is truly holistic, and he has an uncanny ability to tune into exactly what’s going on without me needing to explain very much at all!

His treatments have made such a difference to my ongoing pain, mobility and alignment, particularly the chronic tension and discomfort I carry in my neck, shoulders and upper back. He knows when my body needs deeper remedial work and when a gentler, more relaxing approach will be most beneficial. I love that he looks beyond the immediate symptoms to understand what’s actually contributing to the problem.

Simon is incredibly knowledgeable, skilled, intuitive and genuinely caring. You never feel like you’re receiving a standard massage or being rushed through an appointment. Every session is thoughtful, personalised and remarkably effective, and I always leave feeling so much better than when I arrived.

I feel incredibly fortunate to have found Simon and wouldn’t go anywhere else. If you’re looking for exceptional remedial massage or holistic massage therapy in the Emerald, Monbulk or wider Dandenong Ranges area, I cannot recommend him highly enough. I travel from Selby to Emerald to see him and he is an absolute gem!

There are many misconceptions about massage therapy. The following outlines the basics of what I do as a practising Remedial Massage Therapist. I describe my work influenced by training and experience gained over six decades as advanced Remedial Therapy.

With a background in both Eastern philosophy and Western science, I bring knowledge of underlying energetics to assessment giving more complete understanding to many conditions. Strongly influenced by the Traditional Chinese Medical model incorporating energetic Qi flow, emotion, diet, weather, physical loading and injury effects.

The majority of the work I do is therapeutic massage treating pain and injury. Remedial Massage Therapy is an assessment and treatment framework incorporating the fundamentals of Physiotherapy to assess posture, pain and injury. Treatment is largely massage based to release tightness, strengthen weakness and promote circulation. Treatment is overtly physical and by its nature strongly relaxing.

My practice also includes Indirect Fascial Release techniques, Craniosacral Therapy and Traditional Chinese Medical practices of Cupping and Gua Sha.

Remedial Massage and Myotherapy are the only forms of therapeutic massage treatment recognised by the Health Department and are typically covered as an extras item under Natural Therapies. I am a registered provider with all Health Funds and WorkSafe.

Fusion of East and West

https://www.massageworksdandenongranges.com.au/fusion-of-east-west

Fusing East and West gives insight to conditions poorly understood by conventional practitioners. It is not merely that I use Chinese techniques of Cupping and Gua Sha in my practice. It is about knowing and understanding energetic Qi flow. Postural anomalies, dysfunction, pain and injury are addressed with treatment guided by principles of energetic Qi flow. The story of how my twelve year association with Professor Wong Lun OBE OAM, 10th dan Tang So Do, influenced me starts here…

Short Right Leg Syndrome

A structurally short right leg is a dominant genetic trait. Even or near even leg length is rare. More complex discussions on my FB page and website cover Short Right Leg Syndrome and the resulting contra-lateral hip rotation, assessment of the Lumbro-Sacral Complex and consequent chronic tightness, pain and suffering this causes along the back line of the lower limbs...gluteal, hamstring, calf, achilles and plantar fascia, plus effects above the waist from mild scoliosis. Decades of distortion and strain through the soft tissue of the pelvis and lumbro-sacral region entrench a “Pelvic Block” impacting the fourteen acupuncture meridians passing through the pelvis with consequent effects on mobility and internal health. These effects escalate as we age beyond the lifespan of our prehistoric ancestors.

Lower Limb Conditions and Energetic Qi Flow

Conventional therapy’s understanding of contributing factors to Plantar Fasciitis, Chronic Compartment Syndrome, Hamstring Dysfunction, Pain and Injury, Piriformis Syndrome and Sciatic Pain is incomplete. A fundamental of energetic principle in physical therapy is, “A proximal block at hip or shoulder has a distal effect in the limb.” Where energetic Qi flow is blocked, a subtle thickening and tightening occurs through the connective tissue which under the influence of loading and other factors can escalate to acute pain, dysfunction and injury. Taking this into account and clearing blockage at the hip generated by structural leg length discrepancy leads to outcomes beyond expectation.

Upper Limb Conditions and Energetic Qi Flow

Similarly upper body anomalies in the torso and shoulder affect the extremities of the upper limbs causing Repetitive Strain Injuries and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. The fundamental underlying energetic principle of “A proximal block at hip or shoulder has a distal effect in the limb” and “Mild Scoliosis” and “The Heart Story” are universal contributing factors.

Lymphatic Drainage Case Study

https://www.massageworksdandenongranges.com.au/lymphatic-drainage

A full Lymphatic Drainage session will take at least 90 minutes. However, it is not always necessary to do a full session where one limb only may be affected. For those that need Lymphatic Drainage it can be powerful and have dramatic effects reducing fluid retention. The Lymphatic system can also be blocked and this treatment can normalise function.

Sports Massage

https://www.massageworksdandenongranges.com.au/sports-massage

I am experienced working on athletes of the highest standard. I have been a high performing athlete both as a youth and mature age veteran and have done sports massage treatments for cyclists, tennis and badminton players, runners, triathletes, gymnasts, divers, dancers, martial artists, yoga instructors and Army commandos. A dozen or more of these clients have represented their countries in international competition and the Olympics. I have a massage routine called The Mr Australia Rubdown developed over a decade working on a now six time winner of the Mr Australia body building title.

Holistic Massage Therapy

https://www.massageworksdandenongranges.com.au/wholistic-massage-therapy

Holistic Massage Therapy is esoteric in nature where the intertwined influences of the physical, energetic and emotion play out together. This is really more of an acknowledgement of the sensitivities and openness of those who connect to and engage with their experience in this arena. I am merely the facilitator. They are the ones holding and experiencing.

Craniosacral Therapy

https://www.massageworksdandenongranges.com.au/cranio-sacral-therapy

Simply put, Craniosacral Therapy is the release of fascial restrictions in the cranium, brain and spine. The effect of this treatment ultimately extends to the entire body. This work is carried out in concert with the Cranial Rhythm of expansion and contraction of the bones of the skull moving at 5 to 6 cycles per minute. Using the lightest of touch, the degree of movement in these releases is mostly in the order of microns but to the practitioner it can feel like several millimetres of travel are achieved. The reality is I am sensing movement and energetic pulses, barriers and waves. Outcomes can be profound and life changing.

You will find considerable material on my FB page Massage Works Dandenong Ranges and website of the same name. Should you have any questions, please ask. I apologise in advance for not answering calls where I am tied up working in clinic…all notifications are off. Leave a voice mail or message me and I will get back to you.

Low Back Pain from the Perspective of Remedial Therapy

A major contribution for low back pain and lumbro-sacral dysfunction is structural leg length discrepancy. Examining structural leg length and hip posture since 2014, my observation is a short right leg is a dominant genetic trait. Even or near even leg length is rare. The consequent distortion and strain on the pelvis impacts mobility of the lower limbs and spine, as well as, internal health.

Evolutionary Adaptation

A short right leg gave mother and child a greater chance of survival in prehistoric times. A structurally short right leg elevates the left hip, creates a right leaning tilt through the pelvis, shifting the centre of gravity in the torso slightly to the right and the hips make a counterbalancing shift to the left. The elevated and jutting left hip is the perfect perch for baby. We carry baby on the left hip freeing the strong right arm for work and defence. This was a survival characteristic for mother and child in prehistoric times. It was the most successful model. A structurally short right leg has become a dominant genetic trait. This is the only purpose for the right short leg. There is no other benefit. Quite the contrary, it becomes a liability as we age beyond the life expectancy of our prehistoric ancestors.

Structural vs Functional Discrepancy

Assessment of structural leg length is not included in medical examination, even in instances of lumbar injury where it is a major contributory factor. Much is made of functional leg length discrepancy by conventional therapists pulling legs or manipulating the spine and hips. This does not alter nor correct a structural discrepancy where bone length differs from side to side.

Interestingly, examination of most cases on the treatment table reveals the ankles are aligned. We walk on flat ground. The ground does not move to accommodate leg length discrepancy. Look to the pelvis for sign of permanent distortion and strain through the soft tissue and joints. The right leaning pelvic tilt imposes huge strain on the lumbar spine and encourages mild scoliosis impacting upper back and neck. Similarly, through energetic blockage and gait effects, lumbro-sacral distortion impacts lower limb function.

Contributory Factors for Low Back Pain

• Pelvic tilt, distortion and strain from structural leg length discrepancy.
• Postural anomalies developed through poor physical development and imbalanced activity levels.
• Current or historic lumbro-sacral injury.
• Energetic deficiency as described by Traditional Chinese Medicine from poor lifestyle habits and/or the effects of structural leg length generating a pelvic block impacting the Bladder meridian, in a sense, starving the Kidneys energetically. In TCM theory, an aching lower back is one of several symptomatic effects associated with Kidney deficiency.

Assessment Observations

There will be an initial assessment of pelvic alignment, scoliosis and structural leg length. Palpation of muscle tone and development reveals much about how we are managing this fundamental postural asymmetry. While every case is unique, there are four common patterns demonstrating how it is playing out through the body. Further insights gained as the case unfolds over the course of treatment.

Assessment objectives are to determine the contribution of postural anomalies, event or accidental impact, and differentiate between muscular and spinal/joint damage generating pain, inflammation, neurological symptoms and restricted range of motion. Referral for medical treatment where massage treatment is contraindicated is uncommon. Acutely injured cases typically consult a medical doctor before considering Remedial Therapy.

Treatment

There are many misconceptions about therapeutic massage. It is not merely a whole lot of blissful rubbing. Where a client starts pointing to various parts of their anatomy describing pain, dysfunction and injury, assessment is required. Massage treatment can be intense working deep into soft tissue releasing tightness, activating weakness, clearing stagnation, promoting circulation. This will be a mix of relaxation, relief and pain during treatment. It is not uncommon for temporary discomfort in days following which longer term benefits become apparent. As condition improves with subsequent sessions, post treatment discomfort ceases altogether.

Where structural leg length discrepancy is the underlying causation for low back pain, a broad array of treatment and rehab methods are used. Spinal and sacral rotation and mobilisation exercises, rehab exercise to normalise hip alignment, application of Traditional Chinese Cupping, and conventional massage treatment are beneficial. Fascial release techniques, joint distraction and facilitated stretching targets deep held unconscious holding patterns that have developed through the pelvis. Where acute symptoms have developed, it like we always need a small adjusting heel lift under the short leg.

Some cases are more difficult to treat than others. The sidedness of the case and degree of symptomatic acuteness do have an impact. Left and right sided symptoms may appear similar but the underlying mechanism side to side is very different. Then too, client engagement with treatment recommendations can impact outcomes…attention to rehab activity or managing use of a heel lift is necessary. Exercise is the best medicine.

Where catastrophic injury has occurred and the use of strong pain killers and anit-inflammatories are necessary can be a contra-indication for massage treatment and physical therapy. It may be necessary to wait until acute symptoms have subsided.

While dramatic enduring beneficial effects can be quickly achieved, for conditions that have taken decades to develop, it can be a process of months or years to completely unwind and resolve. Unfolding in stages, condition improves until driving to the core of the issue. Affected joints may be problematic and require much mobilisation and appropriate nutritional supplementation to improve condition.

Rigid tissues and joints must regain flexibility. There is no expectation of achieving perfect symmetry in our structure after being under the influence of gravity and leg length discrepancy for several decades. There is a certain amount of change that will not be undone. Nevertheless, even advanced cases facing the prospect of retirement from active life can be improved. This is my experience.

Raised as a youth in the Orient and the son of an engineer, I was surrounded by and immersed in science. Ironically, the paradigm reversed in early adulthood when disoriented by culture shock being thrust back into the West after an 18 year absence, I received guidance from a Grandmaster martial artist and Chinese medical practitioner, Professor Wong Lun OBE OAM, 10th dan Tang So Do. He brought a semblance of balance to the disturbed young man. Years of martial and meditative training imparted an intellectual but also directly physical and palpable insight to the underpinnings of Eastern philosophy.

Later exposed to the fundamentals of Physiotherapy through the diploma of Remedial Massage at Swinburne University, it became apparent the concept of energetic Qi flow relates directly to a vast array of poorly understood symptoms of pain and suffering sighted in clinical practice. Simply put, if energy flow is blocked for any reason, thickening and tightening occurs through the connective tissue leading to pain and dysfunction at both the point of blockage and remotely at sites which you can think of as being down stream in the energetic flow. Blockage can be caused by injury, overuse, poor posture, leg length discrepancy, weather, emotional trauma or internal health conditions. While the nature of the energy affected is similar to that treated by TCM practitioners applying acupuncture along the 12 bilateral and 2 central meridians, my observations and work more commonly relates to energy flow through musculature and over the bones akin to fascial meridians described by Rolfing practitioners.

Clearing blockages to energy flow requires a knowledge of the underlying cause. Merely massaging tightness can be ineffective as evidenced, for instance, by the multitudes of long term sufferers of Plantar Fasciitis in the foot or Repetitive Strain Injury to the forearm. Foot/calf or forearm/wrist treatments may give limited short term relief but rarely provide a cure. Focusing on correcting postural anomalies and releasing unconscious holding patterns and rigidity at the hip, shoulder and/or torso can be the missing key to a successful treatment outcome. Results can be dramatic and virtually immediate in cases where symptoms have not yet degenerated to overt physical damage. Clearing the blockage and promoting the smooth flow of energy immediately releases tightness and removes thickening through the fascia...pain is eliminated typically within one to three treatment sessions.

Similarly, upper back and neck musculature corded and as hard as steel cable causing stabbing pain between the shoulder blades frequently does not respond to massage, trigger pointing, stretching or joint manipulation. I have seen numerous cases that were in constant pain for years...one not even bothering to mention it, now believing there was no hope of treatment or cure. The underlying cause in this instance can be excessive heat in the body (liver fire) affecting tendons and connective tissue through the musculature down to the bone and can be aggravated by attacking wind/weather. The internal heat can be reduced by dietary change in a matter of months, TCM herbal treatment within weeks, or topically by Gua Sha (scraping or spooning) treatment within minutes...the latter providing immediate relief from tightness and pain.

We are aware stress makes us tight but how emotion affects our physicality can be described more specifically. TCM philosophy associates emotions to organs of the body. The heart is about joy and happiness, the liver is affected by anger, the kidneys...fear (if we experience fright it affects the kidneys, if we have weak kidneys we will be fearful), the lungs...grief (individuals who have lost a loved one are commonly afflicted by bronchitis in the following year) and the stomach...pensiveness or worry.

We are subject to the human condition...we all have ups and down. Everyone is affected to some degree on the left side of the chest, causing tightness through the shoulder, neck and side of the head on the left side. We may be anxious about money issues, worried about our children, affected by stress at work or missing a loved one. These cause unhappiness and block the flow of heart energy causing thickening and tightness through the soft tissue directly over the heart, midway between the sternum and ni**le. I used to think it was me when massaging the front of neck and shoulders...I could work the right side well, gliding smoothly but could not even get my hand in on the left...I thought it was me...I'm uncoordinated on the left. It was several years before I realised it was not me, they were all tight! Performing Craniosacral Therapy, I now find the left side of every head I place my hands on is rigid in comparison to the right side. While these affects are not ideal, usually it is of no great consequence and we manage to cope. However, occasionally this can be the primary cause of crippling pain and suffering, affecting musculature in ways that have medico's scratching their heads. Scans reveal no damage. Scans cannot reveal a broken heart.

My consulting Traditional Chinese Medical practitioner Dr Kevin Duong says to me, "Simon, you are like Chinese doctor...you know so much!!!" I tell him, "No Kevin...I am not doctor like you."
