Your big toe is more important than you might think
Your big toe plays an important role during walking and pushing off.
Try walking barefoot and notice what happens as your heel lifts from the ground.
Your big toe should contribute to the final part of the step.
Limited big-toe movement can change how you push off and how your foot moves through the walking cycle.
This is particularly relevant if you have:
• Stiff big toes
• Bunions
• Foot pain
• Changes in walking
• Reduced balance
Sometimes a small joint can have a surprisingly important job.
👣 Don't overlook your big toe.

Why I care so much about helping people understand their bodies.
I don't believe you should have to simply hand your body over to someone else and hope they can fix it.
I want my clients to understand what is happening in their bodies.
To notice changes.
To understand movement.
To recognise when something isn't working well.
And, where possible, to learn what they can do themselves.
For me, treatment is not just about what happens during an appointment.
It's about giving you knowledge that you can take with you when you walk out the door.
That is a big part of what Bodywork Evolution is about.

Are your feet actually moving?
Feet aren't supposed to be rigid blocks.
They are made up of numerous bones and joints that allow them to adapt to different surfaces and movement demands.
When you walk, your foot needs to absorb load and then become more stable as you push away from the ground.
If your feet have become stiff, weak or restricted, other parts of your body may have to compensate.
Try this:
Stand barefoot and slowly lift your heels.
Notice how your weight moves through your feet.
Then slowly lower your heels.
Can you feel where you're loading?

Why one-to-one Pilates can be different
Everyone moves differently.
Two people can have the same diagnosis or similar symptoms but require completely different exercises.
That's one of the advantages of private Clinical Pilates.
Your session can be adjusted according to:
✔ Your current strength
✔ Your mobility
✔ Your previous injuries
✔ Your movement patterns
✔ Your confidence and experience
✔ What you want to achieve
Exercises can also be progressed as your movement improves.
It's not about keeping up with a class. It's about working with your body.

Your feet are your foundation
Think about a building.
If the foundation changes, everything above it has to adapt.
Your feet are your foundation when you're standing and moving. They constantly respond to the surface underneath you, your body weight and the demands of movement.
Changes in how your foot loads the ground can influence how your ankle, knee, hip and pelvis move.
That doesn't mean every knee, hip or back problem starts in the feet.
But when assessing movement, the feet are often worth looking at.
👣 How well do your feet move and adapt?

Do you need to stretch more?
Not necessarily.
If a muscle constantly feels tight, your first instinct might be to stretch it harder.
But persistent tightness doesn't always mean that a muscle simply needs more stretching.
Your body may be responding to weakness, altered movement, lack of mobility elsewhere, repetitive activity or previous injury.
Instead of continually stretching the same area, it can be useful to ask:
Why does this area keep feeling tight?
Understanding the reason behind the restriction can be more useful than repeatedly treating the symptom.

Why does your body keep getting tight in the same place?
Ever notice that the same area keeps becoming tight, even after stretching or massage?
Sometimes the problem isn't simply the muscle that feels tight.
Your body works as a connected system. Changes in movement, posture, breathing, previous injuries and the way you use your body can all influence how tension is distributed.
This is one reason a whole-body approach can be useful. Rather than only treating where you feel the discomfort, we can look at how the surrounding areas are moving and contributing.
Sometimes the place that hurts isn't the whole story.

Pain doesn't always mean something is damaged
Pain can be worrying, particularly when it keeps returning.
But pain and tissue damage aren't always directly proportional.
Pain is influenced by many factors, including how the nervous system is responding, previous experiences, movement, stress, sleep and the context in which the pain occurs.
This doesn't mean pain isn't real.
It means that understanding pain can be more complicated than simply asking:
"What structure is causing the pain?"
A thorough assessment looks at the bigger picture and considers how you move and function.

15/09/2026

Your body is designed to move —
But it doesn't have to move perfectly!
There's often a lot of pressure to have "perfect posture" or perfect movement.
In reality, human bodies are constantly adapting.
There isn't one perfect sitting position, one perfect way to walk or one perfect exercise for everyone.
There is also a lot of controversy about whether posture matters…
I feel that if it changes or restricts function, then yes, it does matter, but there isn't a single perfect sitting position, a single perfect way to walk, or a single perfect exercise for everyone.
What matters is having enough strength, mobility, control, and variety of movement to meet the demands of your everyday life.

That's the philosophy behind the work at Bodywork Evolution:
Move Better • Feel Better • Live Better
Whether you're working with Clinical Pilates, remedial bodywork, myofascial therapy or Jaw Work, the goal is to help you better understand and work with your own body.
