Eyelid taping isn’t a new trend. It’s a makeup technique that has been around for decades.
It originated in Japan in the 1970s as a beauty technique to create the appearance of an eyelid crease for monolid eyes. Over time, it became widely adopted across many Asian countries and is now used by people all over the world not just those with Asian eyes, but anyone with hooded, uneven or low-crease eyelids who wants more visible lid space.
I’m Vietnamese, was born in Hong Kong, and have lived in Australia since I was three years old.
So being called “racist” because I said, “Eyelid taping is not just for Asian eyes,” genuinely blows my mind 🤯
Acknowledging where a technique originated and saying it can benefit more than one group of people are not contradictory statements. Both can be true at the same time.
The purpose of my content has always been education. As a makeup artist who specialises in Asian features, I also love teaching how these techniques can be adapted for different eye shapes. Makeup should be about understanding anatomy, not gatekeeping techniques.
Words like “racist” carry real weight. Using them without understanding the context of what someone actually said diminishes meaningful conversations and makes it harder to have respectful discussions.
If you disagree with me, that’s completely okay. But let’s have the conversation based on what was actually said not base it on assumptions.
If I knew this makeup technique would book me more clients and fly me to destination weddings across the world 🌍 I would have doubled down on learning eyelid taping earlier in my makeup career.
As an Asian makeup artist trained in Australia I’m not going to lie, I was always scared of this technique. Clients would ask me do you use eyelid tapes and I would politely say “no I don’t use it because it looks unnatural…”
But the truth is I didn’t offer it because I didn’t know how to use it. It intimidated me so much and I was scared of ruining the eye makeup.
But after much practice and training and obsessing over it I can now be honest with myself and be real with you guys.
This makeup technique is an ABSOLUTE GAME CHANGER 🔥
MUAs the transformation you give a client that has always struggled with heavy hooded eyes all their life is life changing.
It’s not about changing someone’s features completely. It’s about giving them something that they have desired for so long but has never achieved it with just makeup alone.
This eyelid taping technique is a temporary fix. It is not permanent and I don’t recommend to use it everyday. But for special occasions I highly recommend it if it’s going to make you feel a million dollars.
Just like false eyelashes enhances the eyes, eyelid tape does just that as well but with even more impact.

Not every bride who asks a lot of questions is “high maintenance.” Sometimes she’s just been let down one too many times. 🤍
Before I met Christine in Tuscany, I’d never done her makeup in person.
She flew me from Australia because she wanted someone who truly understood Asian features, hooded eyes and the small details that make such a big difference.
So throughout the morning she reminded me…
“Are you going to do a winged eyeliner situation?”
“Can we do eyeshadow on the bottom lash line?”
“Twist my hair like this.”
She even told me she doesn’t like grand reveals and wanted to see herself in stages.
To some artists, that might feel like a client questioning their ability.
But to me, I saw a bride who had spent years learning what made her feel beautiful and wasn’t willing to leave it to chance on one of the biggest days of her life.
As makeup artists, it’s easy to become defensive when a client is very particular. (I am definitely guilty of this in the past)
But if we stop for a second and ask ourselves why, the answer is often empathy.
Many Asian women have had experiences where their hooded eyes weren’t understood, their features were over-contoured with the wrong shade, or they were given makeup that looked beautiful on someone else but didn’t translate on them.
That experience and feeling shapes the way they walk into the chair.
Sometimes they aren’t testing your skills.
They’re looking for reassurance that this time will be different.
The most important part of being a bridal makeup artist isn’t just creating beautiful makeup.
It’s creating enough trust that your bride can finally relax.
