For Kim McLeod Flexney, sustainability began long before it became a word we heard everywhere.

Growing up surrounded by nature, crystal-clear creeks and edible gardens in Mullumbimby shaped the way she thought about food, health and our connection to the earth.

Years later, as a mum of three, those early lessons became part of the journey behind Bask.

This month Kim steps out from behind the scenes to share more of her own story, the experiences that shaped her and the heart behind her business.

Read her Natural Health column in the October edition of Alive Magazine or online here. https://alivemag.blog/2026/10/01/from-roots-to-remedies-at-bask/

Have you ever heard of Tulsi?

Also known as Holy Basil, Tulsi has a long history of use in Ayurvedic traditions and is sometimes referred to as the “Queen of Herbs”.

In keeping with the theme of our Teachers Edition, Kim McLeod Flexney takes the idea of teaching somewhere a little unexpected — into the garden.

Her article looks at why Tulsi has earned a reputation as a “plant teacher”, exploring its traditional uses, the research surrounding the herb and the different ways people incorporate Tulsi into their everyday wellness routines.

One of the simplest is also perhaps the nicest: sitting down with a warm cup of Tulsi tea and allowing that moment to become a little ritual in an otherwise busy day.

Kim explores Tulsi in Why Tulsi is the Ultimate ‘Plant Teacher’, featured in the natural health section of September’s Alive Magazine.

An interesting read for anyone who enjoys learning more about herbs, traditional wellness practices and the plants growing around us.

Place your hand in soil and something in your nervous system exhales.

In real soil lives a bacterium called Mycobacterium vaccae, a microbe your immune system has been in conversation with since before agriculture, since before the word health existed. That relationship is dynamic: contact with it can lower stress hormones and support serotonin production in the brain, shifting your internal chemistry within minutes.

Your body still remembers how to read that message.

This is what a dynamic ecosystem does: it trades, constantly, in real time, a body in continuous exchange with soil, air, water, and the microbes moving quietly between them. Tend one strand of that exchange: the soil, the food it grows, the hands that touch it, and the whole system shifts with it.

What is one exchange in your day that could become more dynamic, more alive, more reciprocal, than it is right now? 14/09/2026
