Ever wondered why low electrolyte levels can contribute to muscle cramps, weakness, fatigue, or poor recovery?

Every muscle contraction in your body depends on electrical signals generated by key electrolytes:

⚡ Sodium (Na⁺) – Initiates nerve impulses that trigger muscle activity.

⚡ Potassium (K⁺) – Helps reset muscle cells after contraction so they are ready for the next movement.

⚡ Calcium (Ca²⁺) – Triggers muscle fibers to contract by allowing the interaction of the proteins responsible for movement.

⚡ Magnesium (Mg²⁺) – Helps muscles relax and regulates calcium activity within muscle tissue.

Research shows that electrolytes are essential for nerve conduction, muscle contraction, cellular electrical activity, and normal muscle function. When electrolyte levels become imbalanced, muscle performance can be affected and symptoms such as cramps, weakness, twitching, and fatigue may occur.

At Lismore Osteopathy, we look at the bigger picture of health and recovery. If you're experiencing muscle tightness, cramping, fatigue, or recurrent injuries, electrolyte balance may be one factor worth considering.

👉 Next time you visit your osteopath, ask about which electrolytes your body may need, and whether supplementation could be beneficial for your individual circumstances.

📚 Research:
• National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI): Electrolytes play a critical role in nerve transmission and muscle function.
• Institute of Medicine: Adequate electrolyte intake is essential for normal neuromuscular activity.

🧠 New osteopathy research in 2026 continues to show promising results for chronic pain and movement-related conditions.

A recent systematic review analyzing 15 clinical trials and over 2,400 participants found growing evidence that osteopathic treatment will help reduce pain, improve mobility, and support long-term function, particularly for chronic low back pain.

Researchers also highlighted the increasing focus on combining hands-on treatment with exercise, nervous system regulation, and modern pain science. 🙌
