WHEN MASSAGE ISN’T ENOUGH
Sometimes you can massage a tight trap for 30 minutes… and it still comes back.
Why?
Because “tight” doesn’t always mean the muscle simply needs more pressure.
Massage can help reduce muscle tension, improve movement and decrease sensitivity — but sometimes there’s a very specific, stubborn area that needs a more targeted approach.
That’s where dry needling can be useful.
The needle allows me to target a specific area of taut or sensitive muscle rather than treating the whole area with pressure.
It can help reduce local sensitivity and muscle tension and, when appropriate, can be combined with massage and movement to help improve how that muscle functions.
So I’m not choosing dry needling over massage.
I’m choosing the technique that best matches what I’m finding during the assessment.
Massage + dry needling + movement = a more targeted approach.
Because the goal isn’t just to make your traps feel better for an hour.
It’s to help you move better and stay better.

4 of my go-to rehab and mobility exercises for front shoulder pain.
Quick disclaimer: These exercises were selected specifically for this shoulder. They’re fantastic exercises, but they’re not automatically right for everyone.
The main goal is to improve shoulder extension—both the mobility to get there and the strength to own it.
1. Barbell Backpack
One of my all-time favourites. The band pulls the shoulders back while you work into extension, opening the chest and stretching the front of the shoulders and biceps. A supinated grip makes it even more effective.
2. Double Extension
Now that extension is improving, it’s time to strengthen it. This combines shoulder extension with external rotation to wake up the rotator cuff and upper back in a position most people never train.
3. Front Lever Flys
Think of these as a Skin-the-Cat-inspired fly variation. Although you’re performing shoulder flexion, gravity gently pulls you into deeper shoulder extension every rep, helping build both mobility and strength.
4. Barbell Shoulder Extension
Simple… but incredibly effective. Grab a barbell behind your back with a supinated grip and try to lift it away from your body. Once you’ve gained new range, you need to strengthen it so your shoulders actually keep it.
Mobility gets you the range. Strength helps you keep it.
This is what I do!
Why are you so stiff? 😂
Shoulder pain but no shoulder warm-up?
If you’ve only got 2 minutes before training, grab a glute band and do this:
👉🏻Band Pull-Aparts – 1 minute
Activates the rotator cuff, opens the chest, and improves shoulder position.
👉🏻Serratus “Forklift” Raises – 1 minute
Fires up the serratus anterior to help keep your shoulders stable overhead.
That’s it.
Run it as a 2-minute AMRAP and focus on getting blood flow into the muscles. It’s not a full mobility routine, but it’s the bare minimum that can make a big difference—especially if you’re over 30.
Your sleep position might be the reason you’re waking up stiff, sore, or with pain…
Small habits at night can quietly stress your neck, back, and nerves over time.
Comment “YES” and I’ll show you what to fix.

Pain between your shoulder blades?
It’s usually not just “tight” it’s overworked.
These muscles are constantly holding you upright, especially with posture and training.
Dry needling helps release that tension and reset the area so it can move properly again.
