🎤 SPEAKER ANNOUNCEMENT | 47th AKBC–KABC Joint Meeting

We are pleased to announce that Goran Galic, Partner at A&O Shearman, will be speaking at the 47th AKBC-KABC Joint Meeting, to be held in Adelaide on 1–2 September 2026.

Goran will moderate the Future Opportunities in Steel, Battery Materials and Critical Minerals session, bringing more than 20 years of experience advising clients across the mining, energy and resources sectors. Goran is an energy, resources and projects specialist with experience across project acquisitions, joint ventures, developments, operations and regulation. He has been involved in major mineral and LNG projects in Australia and internationally.

🎤 SPEAKER ANNOUNCEMENT | 47th AKBC–KABC Joint Meeting

We are pleased to announce that Peter Cleary, Principal at Glenoak Energy and Board Director at the Australia-Korea Business Council, will be speaking at the 47th Australia–Korea Business Council (AKBC)-Korea–Australia Business Council (KABC) Joint Meeting, to be held in Adelaide on 1–2 September 2026.

Peter will moderate the Opening Panel, Trusted Partners in a Changing World, bringing extensive experience across the energy sector and the Australia–Korea business relationship.

Peter is pursuing a portfolio of opportunities as an adviser and board member, following a distinguished executive career in the energy sector. He moved from executive life after leaving Santos at the end of 2015, where he held two commercial Vice President positions.

Prior to Santos, Peter had a 24-year career with BP, where he held senior management positions across Australia, Indonesia, Korea, Hong Kong, Abu Dhabi and the United Kingdom.

Peter is currently a Board Director of the Australia-Korea Business Council and the Australia Japan Business Co-operation Committee.

We are pleased to announce that Clare Pope, Partner at Gilbert + Tobin, will be speaking at the 47th AKBC-KABC Joint Meeting, to be held in Adelaide on 1–2 September 2026.

Clare will moderate the session Energy Transition, Decarbonisation and Emerging Technologies, bringing extensive experience across the mining, energy, power/renewables and infrastructure sectors.

Clare joined Gilbert + Tobin as a Partner in the Energy + Resources team in 2023. Prior to this, she was a partner in the legal team at PwC, where she led the practice in Western Australia.

She specialises in M&A, joint ventures and project development across the mining, energy, power/renewables and infrastructure sectors. Clare is also an AKBC Board Director.

In June, the Australia–Korea Business Council (AKBC) was pleased to once again deliver a pre-departure briefing session for students from Swinburne University, ahead of their Law, Governance and Culture Study Tour to Korea in July.⁠

Building on the success of sessions delivered for Swinburne's Engineering and Law students in previous years, the briefing provided practical insights to help students maximise their academic and cultural experience in Korea.⁠

The session explored:⁠
🔹Korean business and social etiquette, communication styles, and cultural expectations, equipping students to engage confidently in professional and social settings⁠
🔹The historical and economic context underpinning the Australia–Korea relationship, providing students with a deeper understanding of the bilateral partnership⁠
🔹Practical advice on engaging with Korean organisations and professionals, helping students navigate their study program with cultural awareness and confidence⁠

AKBC has been proud to support Swinburne University’s Korea study tours with Reho Study Tours, helping students develop the cultural understanding and confidence needed to engage effectively with Korean institutions and industry.⁠

🇦🇺🇰🇷 Another important connection between Australia and Korea is returning.

AKBC welcomes the announcement that Korean Air will return to Melbourne for the first time in 13 years, launching direct services between Melbourne and Seoul from 18 December 2026.

The seasonal service will operate three times a week between Melbourne and Seoul Incheon, using a Boeing 787-9.

Direct air connectivity matters enormously to the Australia–Korea relationship. It makes it easier for businesses to build relationships, executives and delegations to travel between our two markets, students and researchers to collaborate, and tourists to experience both countries.

It is particularly encouraging to see this investment at a time when the Australia–Korea relationship is broadening across energy, critical minerals, advanced manufacturing, defence, technology, education and tourism.

As Melbourne Airport Chief of Aviation Jim Parashos noted, a reliable direct connection between Melbourne and Seoul matters for Victorian exporters, the tourism sector and Victoria’s Korean community.
