Not every kitchen needs the same grease trap — and running the wrong one is usually why some places block up every few weeks no matter how often it's pumped out.
There's a few different types out there, and each one suits a different kind of kitchen:
- Passive traps (gravity traps) — the most common setup, no power needed, just relies on gravity to separate the fat and oil. Cheap to install, easy to maintain. Suits cafes, small takeaway shops and low-volume kitchens.
- Automatic Grease Recovery Units (GRUs) — a mechanical unit that removes grease continuously instead of waiting on manual pump outs. Costs more upfront but keeps up with busy kitchens and doesn't take up much floor space. Suits busy restaurants and kitchens tight on space.
- In-ground concrete traps — the big underground option, built for high-volume wastewater. More expensive to put in but built to last. Standard for hotels, function centres and large commercial kitchens.
Wrong size or wrong type for your kitchen, and you'll be fighting blockages no matter how often you get it pumped out.
