MAMAWEST

8 Thread Lane, Melbourne Hair salon

Putting a new spin on the neighbourhood salon. Because life is so short for sh!t hair It’s never just a haircut, it’s an experience.

Sheridan Rose Shaw is a hair and makeup artist based in inner west Melbourne. Sheridan began her styling days training under Frank Burgemeester at FB Salons, and now with over 14 years experience in the industry and some of Melbourne’s most elite salons in her work history, she has established herself as a multifaceted stylist – specialising in colour, colour correction, bridal, men’s haircutting and makeup. Sheridan has recently used her background to launch MAMAWEST, a hair salon / collaborative co working space business that offers services which focuses on both the product and the person. Her vision is to get to know who her clients are and to express that through hair and makeup. One where you will walk away and not only look and feel good!

Okay, look. We know loyalty schemes can be a bit… corporate. A free coffee after approximately 400 years? Greeeeaaat.

That’s boring. So we made our own.

MAMAWEST VIP is our little inner circle for the people that make this place what it is ~ our ride or dies. The ones who have kept on coming back. You know who you are!

Spend a dollar, earn a point. Do other little things? You might earn some more. And those points can get you in-salon upgrades, surprise gift drops, and some other sneaky treats 👀

Fancy getting in on it? Comment VIP 💋

This Saturday is World Homelessness Day, and we are so proud to be partnering with St Mary’s House of Welcome for their Cut Homelessness fundraiser. For every appointment we have on Saturday, we will donate $5, and we’ll be collecting donations too.

This World Homelessness Day has been a wild ride for me. I’ve mostly kept quite private about my life, and my past, but last week I got offered an opportunity to speak to channel 10 about my journey, from not having a home to owning my own business, that will air on Sunday night. It’s unbelievably humbling to even be offered the opportunity. I’m really nervous about it, but I think it’s important to talk about these issues to raise awareness for how many people are doing it tough in Australia.

I want to make sure our books are FILLED tomorrow to raise as much money as possible for supported housing in Fitzroy. So get your butts to MAMAWEST tomorrow to look good and do good. LOVE FROM MAMA ❤️

This World Homelessness Day, October 10, we are making a $5 donation per appointment supporting people experiencing homelessness through St Mary’s House of Welcome.

Psst… hey, you. Yeah, you. Wanna be part of our super secret special VIP club?

MAMAWEST is proud to announce MAMAWEST VIP’s ~ our little loyalty scheme for the people who keep coming back, hanging out with us, and generally making MAMAWEST what it is.

Every dollar you spend = 1 point.

You can also collect points for doing other little things, because we don’t think loyalty should just be about spending money.

Your points can turn into in-salon upgrades, gift drops, sneaky little prizes and other nice things we’re not quite ready to tell you about yet.

Basically: come to MAMAWEST, leave with incredible hair, collect points, get nice things. Sound good?

We’re opening the VIP waitlist now, so if you want in, comment “VIP”.

I am so excited to share that after an amazing year gallivanting the globe, teaching hair, and having a BABY - I am returning to the floor on a limited basis!

I had my first day on the floor yesterday and I am overwhelmed with gratitude. This year has been a crazy amazing journey, awards and all - but I have missed cutting hair and all of you so much. IT HURTS!

By popular demand, I am opening an extremely limited waitlist for some afternoon appointments at MAMAWEST. No distractions, just you and me doing what we’ve always done, but better!

See you soon x

“There is such an opportunity for this safe space to become more than just a haircut.”

This is Oskah, or LOVE WEST, our marvellous first-year hair apprentice. After completing their social work degree, they decided to study hairdressing because they wanted a practical caring skill that could combine with their studies. Now, they can use their unique experience, university degree and practical skills to provide a niche but necessary service to our society: gender-affirming hair care.

Australia’s hair industry has a problem. Every year, fewer students are choosing to study hair. Students just like Oskah aren’t presented with the reality that it doesn’t haven’t to be one or the other ~ you can have both if you desire! A practical trade, AND a university degree.

We’ve had enough of the stigma. As Oskah said, our work is so much more than “just a haircut”. We are creative and social leaders, natural carers, clever problem solvers, physical labourers, and so much more in one.

Oskah is doing their little bit to build a more inclusive future ~ and that’s bloody inspiring.

There’s no such thing as “just a hairdresser”.

We want to share some tributes to Todd given at our Glam for Good event last month.

We held Glam for Good three days after the news of Todd passing. Showing up to be of service was unbelievably difficult for us, yet also came as a time of healing, as we got to give and receive the love we needed. Todd would have showed up no matter what, and we led by his example.

In honour of Todd, we have set up a fundraiser to fund a future hair apprentice. Overnight, this incredible community has already given more than $3000 to support it. This fundraiser could support a young person to fulfil their dreams of becoming a hairdresser. The link to this is in our bio if you’d like to support it.

We know how vital education can be to a young person’s life. Thank you so much for all your support at this time.
