CUTTING EDITION✂️ TERMS EVERY BEGINNER SHOULD KNOW Hairdressing & Barber School - Perth, Whadjuk Country

GUIDELINE 📏
A section of hair that acts as a visual reference for the length or shape you’re creating.
Guidelines help you work consistently and connect different lengths.

WEIGHT LINE 🏋️
The area where there is a noticeable concentration of length and density in the haircut.
Understanding weight lines helps you know where you may need to remove or maintain weight.

GRADUATION 📐
A technique where the hair is cut to create weight and a graduated shape, with shorter hair underneath building towards longer hair.

OVERDIRECTION ↗️
Moving the hair away from its natural fall or cutting position before making the cut.
This can be used to create length and control where weight is placed.

BULK 💪🏼
An area where there is more density or weight than desired.
Barbers may use techniques such as scissor-over-comb or clipper-over-comb to manage unwanted bulk.

CLIPPER OVER COMB 💈
A technique using a comb and running the clippers along it to blend different lengths together.
Great for blending and removing bulk.

SCISSOR OVER COMB ✂️
A technique where the comb controls the hair while scissors remove excess length.
Often used for refining shape, blending and controlling weight.

NECKLINE 〰️
The finishing shape created at the back of the neck.
Common neckline shapes include:
Natural
Rounded
Squared
Faded/Blended

The more familiar you become with these terms, the easier it becomes to understand instructions, communicate with your trainer and confidently explain your approach 🔥
