Three skin changes that occur during menopause and what can be done about them.

1️⃣ Collagen loss
Estrogen supports collagen production. As levels decline, the skin loses density, firmness and elasticity at a rate that accelerates significantly in the first five years following menopause. Clinical treatments that support collagen and skin structural integrity become more relevant at this stage, not less.
2️⃣ Barrier dysfunction
Lower estrogen affects the skin's ability to retain moisture and maintain a healthy barrier. Skin that was previously oily or combination can become dry, sensitive and reactive seemingly overnight. Home care needs to reflect this shift, with a focus on barrier repair and hydration rather than the actives that suited the skin before.
3️⃣ Structural change

The small red vessels visible on the face are not broken. They are permanently dilated, sitting close enough to the surface to show through the skin.

Telangiectasia, commonly referred to as broken capillaries, develop through a combination of genetics, cumulative sun exposure, temperature fluctuation and skin trauma over time. They are a structural vascular change. That distinction matters because it determines what will and will not work in addressing them.

Topical skincare manages the appearance of redness. It does not change the vessel itself. Laser and light based therapies work differently, targeting the vessel directly and causing it to collapse and fade without disrupting the surrounding skin.
