Hi Dr Jonathan here,
One of the most common questions I receive from patients and followers is: "What's the difference between LED and laser hair growth devices?"
Many people assume they're the same thing.
They're not.
And understanding the distinction could save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars when choosing a home hair restoration device.
In my latest YouTube video, I break down one of the most misunderstood topics in hair restoration and explain exactly what separates LED technology from true low-level laser therapy (LLLT).
Drawing on my previous experience as Global Medical Director for one of the world's largest laser and cosmetic medicine organisations, performing over 2 million laser treatments annually across seven countries, I share my perspective on where these technologies may fit within a broader hair restoration strategy.

Is sublingual minoxidil actually BETTER… or just hype? 👀
A brand-new randomized clinical trial just compared 5mg sublingual vs 5mg oral minoxidil head-to-head in men with androgenetic alopecia…
And the results?
👉 Not what most people expected.
In this breakdown, I cover:
• Why minoxidil even works (and why delivery route matters)
• The double-blind RCT design (yes - proper data)
• Hair growth outcomes (density + terminal hairs)
• Side effects - including cardiovascular considerations
• And what this ACTUALLY means for real patients
Key takeaway:
Both worked.
Neither was superior for regrowth.
But tolerability may be where things start to differ.
If you’re choosing between oral vs sublingual minoxidil…
watch this before you decide.

If I could go back and start my hair loss journey again, there are 3 things I would do differently.
As both a hair loss physician and someone who has personally experienced androgenetic alopecia, hindsight is a wonderful thing.
The three biggest mistakes I made were:
1️⃣ Waiting too long to act
I noticed subtle changes in my hair long before I did anything about them. Hair loss is often easier to stabilise than it is to reverse, so earlier intervention can make a significant difference.
2️⃣ Not addressing the DHT component sooner
DHT-driven miniaturisation is the underlying cause of hair loss for many men and women. Looking back, I would have focused on understanding and managing that process much earlier.
3️⃣ Trying to navigate it alone
There is so much conflicting information online. If I had sought guidance from a hair loss professional from the outset, I would have saved myself years of trial and error, frustration, and uncertainty.
One of the biggest lessons my own journey taught me is that hair loss rarely improves by hoping it will go away on its own.
The earlier you understand what’s causing it, the more options you typically have available to you.
Which of these mistakes do you think people make most often?

I’ve seen a lot of discussion recently around the idea that scalp tension is the primary cause of hair loss and that scalp massage alone can reverse it.
The theory often stems from studies investigating botulinum toxin (Botox) injections into the scalp. While some early research reported improvements in hair counts, the overall evidence remains limited, and more recent randomised controlled trials have not consistently demonstrated the same benefit.
This is an important distinction because many people are now making the leap from “Botox may help” to “therefore scalp massage is all you need.”
That conclusion simply isn’t supported by the current evidence.
Hair loss is a medical condition with many potential causes. Pattern hair loss, telogen effluvium, nutritional deficiencies, inflammatory scalp conditions, autoimmune disease and hormonal disorders can all present differently and require different management strategies.
The first step should never be guessing the treatment.
The first step should be getting the diagnosis right.
Once you understand why you’re losing hair, you can build a treatment plan that is evidence-based, targeted and appropriate for your individual situation.

Have they fixed minoxidil?
Not quite. But they may have improved it.
VDPHL01 is an investigational extended-release version of oral minoxidil currently being studied in Phase 3 trials for pattern hair loss.
Rather than creating an entirely new drug, Veradermics is attempting to optimise a medication that many hair loss doctors already prescribe off-label by developing a formulation specifically designed for hair loss.
Some of the headline findings released so far include:
• Significant increases in hair density by Month 2 and Month 4
• Approximately 82% of participants achieving at least moderate improvement
• Consistent photographic improvement
• Potentially improved tolerability through extended-release delivery
• Hair growth without reducing DHT
If successful, VDPHL01 could become one of the first FDA-approved oral medications developed specifically for androgenetic alopecia.
That said, we still need peer-reviewed publication, longer-term safety data, independent validation and more detailed side effect reporting before drawing firm conclusions.
Promising? Absolutely.
Proven? Not yet.

🚨 Severe Hair Shedding Isn’t Necessarily Genetic 🚨
This is a devastating case of Telogen Effluvium my darling sister suffered, triggered by an unexpected Vitamin C deficiency - something most people never think to check. Dr Jonathan Hopkirk
Excessive shedding. Sudden density loss. Hair everywhere.
And the cause wasn’t DHT… it was nutritional deficiency pushing follicles into shock.
Through a targeted medical assessment and a personalised Hair Restoration Protocol (HRP™️), we addressed the root cause - not just the symptom and supported the follicles back into a healthy growth cycle.
📉 Hair loss can be a warning sign, not just a cosmetic issue.
📈 The right diagnosis changes everything.
If you’re shedding more than normal, this might be the sign you shouldn’t ignore.
