The Smiling on the Inside Philosophy
For a long time, I believed that healing meant becoming someone different.
Calmer.
Less anxious.
Less overwhelmed.
Less emotional.
More capable.
More resilient.
Over time, I've come to see it differently.
I don't believe our goal is to fight ourselves into becoming someone new.
I believe our greatest transformation begins when we learn to understand ourselves.
To become curious about our inner landscape.
To listen to our body instead of battling against it.
To recognise that our nervous system, emotions and physiology are not working against us, but constantly communicating something meaningful.
The more we understand ourselves, the more we begin to work with ourselves rather than against ourselves.
That doesn't mean life suddenly becomes easy.
Challenges will still arise.
Grief, stress, uncertainty and hardship are all part of being human.
But understanding ourselves changes the way we move through those experiences.
It allows us to respond with greater awareness, self-compassion and intention rather than being driven purely by fear, shame or survival.
This philosophy sits beneath everything I do.
Every treatment.
Every workshop.
Every conversation.
Every piece of education I create.
It is built on one simple belief:
Every human being already possesses an inner compass.
Sometimes we simply need to learn how to hear it again.
Because when we begin to understand ourselves, we begin to truly smile on the inside. 🌿🤍

As I was putting this carousel together, I found myself reflecting on all the people who have shaped the way we understand the human body today.

People like Wilhelm Reich, Peter Levine, Stephen Porges, Deb Dana, Arielle Schwartz, Bessel van der Kolk, Dan Siegel, Gil Hedley, Robert Schleip, Bruce Perry, Allan Schore, John Bowlby, Mary Ainsworth and so many others.

I am deeply grateful for their curiosity, their courage to question old ideas and their willingness to share what they discovered.

At the same time, some of my greatest lessons haven't come from books.

They came through burnout.

They came through walking alongside my daughter and witnessing firsthand the profound difference that safety, understanding and connection can make.

And they came through twenty years of working with thousands of people and observing the same truth again and again.

When people feel safe, something changes.

The breath deepens.

The body softens.

Capacity begins to return.

The more I learn, the more convinced I become that the body is not working against us. It is constantly adapting, responding and doing its best to support us.

To every researcher, teacher, mentor, client and family who has contributed to this understanding, thank you.

You have all been my teachers. 🤍

There are some areas of work that stay with you long after the session has ended.
This is one of them.
Over the years I have had the privilege of supporting people through some of life's most challenging and uncertain seasons. Seasons that can bring significant physical, emotional and practical challenges, not only for the individual but often for the people who love and support them as well.
One thing this work has taught me is that no diagnosis ever tells the whole story.
Behind every appointment, every treatment plan and every medical file is a person with a lifetime of experiences, relationships, hopes, fears, strengths and dreams.
This carousel shares some of the principles that sit at the heart of how I approach this work.
Not just as a practitioner.
But as a human being walking alongside other human beings.
🤍

💛 WE'RE HOME 💛
After a year away, Smiling on the Inside has officially returned to the heart of Milton.
I am incredibly grateful to be sharing space alongside Caitlin from Solace & Flow, who has created such a beautiful, welcoming environment. From the moment I walked through the door, it felt like a place where people could exhale, slow down and reconnect with themselves.
This year also marks 10 years of Smiling on the Inside.
As I stand in this beautiful new space, I find myself reflecting on just how much this work has evolved over the years.
What began as a simple offering has gradually grown into something much broader. Through twenty years of working with people, studying, learning, observing and remaining endlessly curious about the human experience, each layer has added depth to the work I offer today.
Most of all, I want to say thank you.
To every client who has trusted me over the last decade, thank you.
Thank you for every appointment, every recommendation, every Facebook comment tagging my name, every share, every review, every referral and every conversation where you spoke about my work to someone else.
Small business is built on relationships and community, and Smiling on the Inside simply would not exist without your support.
I see it. I appreciate it. And I am endlessly grateful for it.
I also want to thank my colleagues, family, friends, supporters, teachers, mentors, students and fellow practitioners who have helped shape both me and this work over the years.
Every person I have learned from has contributed a piece to the work I offer today.
Thank you for being part of this journey.
Thank you for helping Smiling on the Inside become what it is today.
And thank you for helping me arrive here, ten years later, feeling more excited about this work than ever before.
💛 We're home.

A little life update 💛

As many of you know, life sometimes moves very quickly — and we are currently needing to move house quite suddenly. Because everything has happened a little last minute, there will be a small transition period while I settle us into our new home and find a new space to rent in town.

From the 2nd of June, I’ll be offering in-home sessions, bringing support directly to you in the comfort of your own space while this next chapter unfolds.

This includes all of the work I currently offer — massage, aromatherapy, somatic and nervous system support, polyvagal-informed sessions, fascia release, yoga-based practices, relaxation treatments, emotional regulation support, and body-based therapeutic work.

There’s actually something really beautiful about receiving these sessions at home — being able to stay in your own environment, settle more deeply into your body, and gently integrate afterwards without needing to rush back out into the world 💛

I’m doing my best to make everything as smooth as possible and truly appreciate everyone’s patience, flexibility, and kindness while things settle into place.

I also completely understand that in-home sessions may not suit everyone, and that is absolutely okay too.

I’m hopeful that a beautiful new space will unfold soon, and I’ll keep everyone updated along the way ✨

Also, all gift vouchers will be extended during this transition period, and vouchers will also be redeemable toward future workshops, circles, yoga classes, and community offerings as these begin to unfold as well.

Thank you all so much for your continued support, encouragement, and understanding. It genuinely means so much to me during seasons like this 🤍

So many people arrive thinking they just need to “relax.”
But often…
their body has been working very hard for a very long time.
Holding.
Bracing.
Adapting.
Staying alert.
Getting through.
At Smiling on the Inside, we don’t rush that.
We listen to the whole system — breath, tissue, tone, rhythm, energy, nervous system — and meet you exactly where you are.
Not with force.
Not with formulas.
Not with one-size-fits-all treatments.
With attunement.
Skill.
And care that builds capacity rather than overwhelms it.
If something in you has been quietly longing for a different way of being held…
You’re welcome here.

Thank you — in a way that feels too big for words, but I’ll try anyway.
Every like, save, comment, follow, or share here might feel tiny — almost automatic — but the impact is anything but.
On a personal level, those small interactions help this work reach people who are exhausted in their bodies and nervous systems, often without knowing why.
People who think they should be coping better.
People who have never been taught that safety, rest, and regulation are foundational — not indulgent.
A save might become someone’s permission to slow down weeks later.
A share might reach someone who has never experienced care that doesn’t require pushing through pain.
A comment might help someone feel less alone in listening to their body for the first time.
And on a systems level, every interaction quietly tells the algorithm: this work is important.
It tells it to keep offering gentler, slower, nervous-system-aware care in a world that rewards urgency and over-functioning.
This work doesn’t shout.
It doesn’t promise quick fixes.
So when you engage with it, you are helping protect space for another way of healing to exist.
I feel deep gratitude for every moment you pause here.
It allows this work — and the people it reaches — to breathe.

For 10 years, every SOTI experience has begun in the same place —
coming back to the body, the breath, and internal safety.
Before any hands-on work.
Before any technique.
Before any change.
In 2026, I’m opening this foundation into shared practice.
This year’s offerings are not about doing more, fixing yourself, or keeping up.
They’re about slowing down enough to feel again — and learning how to support yourself gently, in daily life.
From daily breath and grounding practices,
to deeper self-study circles,
to embodied workshops exploring yoga philosophy, nervous system regulation, emotions, and energy —
each offering is held in intimate small groups and opened one at a time, with care.
There will also be school-holiday workshops for children, supporting regulation, emotional awareness, movement, creativity, and sensory grounding.
Dates will be shared gradually throughout the year.
Nothing is rushed. Nothing is forced.
If something here speaks to you, you’re warmly invited to send me a DM —
to ask questions, share what you’re curious about, or simply stay connected as this year unfolds.
A year to come back to self 🤍

What if… you didn’t need to push harder right now?
What if the exhaustion, tension, or numbness you feel isn’t something to fix —
but something asking to be listened to?
We are living in a world the human body was never designed for.
Fast. Loud. Constant. Always on.
And yet our nervous systems still speak in sensations, rhythm, breath, and rest.
This is an invitation.
To pause for a moment.
To feel your body as you read.
To notice your breath, your posture, the way you’re holding yourself today.
At SOTI, we create spaces to gently come back into the body —
not to change you,
but to support your nervous system in remembering safety, presence, and connection.
You don’t have to disconnect from the world to do this.
You just have to begin listening again.
If this resonates, you’re welcome here.
