🤍 After 28+ years in the beauty industry, there are a few things I wish someone had taught me from day one.
Starting out as a makeup artist can feel overwhelming. What should you invest in? What should you charge? How do you find your style? And how do you handle client expectations?
Here are 5 lessons that would have saved me a lot of time, money and self-doubt:
1. Invest in EDUCATION before PRODUCTS 🎓 Trending products will come and go. Technique stays with you. Before spending hundreds trying to build the “perfect” kit, invest in learning from artists whose work you admire. A great 1:1 lesson can teach you far more than another drawer full of products you don’t know how to use properly.
2. Charge a TRAVEL FEE 🚗
Travel isn’t just petrol.
There’s your time, tolls, parking, vehicle expenses, loading and unloading your kit, setting up and packing down — and the physical toll of carrying everything.
If travel is costing your business money and time, it needs to be factored into your pricing.
3. Your STYLE takes time to develop ✨
When you’re starting out, not every client will necessarily be your ideal client — and that’s okay. Every face you work on helps you improve your technique, understand what you love creating and slowly develop a signature style people will eventually seek you out for.
You don’t need to have it all figured out immediately.
4. Learn how to manage EXPECTATIONS 🤍
Part of becoming a professional artist is knowing what makeup can and can’t realistically achieve. Skin has texture. Concealer can crease. Makeup can enhance and transform, but it isn’t surgery or a filter.
Learn to educate your clients kindly, offer realistic alternatives and never promise a result you know you can’t deliver.
5. Remember: YOU ARE NOT FOR EVERYONE. And you don’t need to be.
You can adapt to different clients and environments without changing who you are.
Your personality, artistry, approach and energy are part of your brand. The goal isn’t to attract everyone, it’s to attract the clients who value what you bring to the chair.
