Did you know? Bulgaria’s accession to the EU resulted in a design change in euro banknotes.

The first 💶 euro banknote featuring the Cyrillic alphabet is the one of €5 and it was issued on 2 May 2013. Since that moment all euro banknote designs feature the word “euro” in the Latin (EURO), Greek (EYPΩ), and Cyrillic (EBPO) alphabets.

This serves as a reminder of how the euro evolves as EU countries join the euro area. The euro ensures that every nation, language, and culture has its place in the European project.

Now Bulgaria prepares to adopt the euro on 1 January 2026.
