Hot flashes can feel like your body suddenly forgot how temperature works.
For some women, they’re occasional.
For others, they disrupt sleep, work, mood, exercise, confidence, and daily life.
At LifeThyme Wellness, we often support hot flashes and menopause symptoms with a combination of acupuncture, herbal medicine, nutrition, and nervous system support.
Acupuncture treatments are designed to help regulate the body’s stress response, support nervous system balance, improve sleep, and reduce the frequency and intensity of hot flashes for many patients.
Herbal medicine may also be used to help support hormonal transition patterns, night sweats, irritability, sleep disturbance, and overall balance — always individualized to the patient.
Many women seek out acupuncture and herbs because they either cannot take hormone replacement therapy, choose not to, or simply want additional support alongside their medical care.
There is no “one size fits all” approach to menopause care.
The goal is helping women feel more comfortable, supported, and functional during this transition.

Week 3: Digestion During Cancer Treatment
Digestive symptoms such as nausea, bloating, reflux, appetite changes, constipation, and diarrhea are common during cancer treatment and recovery.
Acupuncture has been studied extensively for treatment-related nausea and digestive support, particularly during chemotherapy.
Research from the National Cancer Institute and multiple clinical studies support acupuncture as a helpful integrative therapy for chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting.
At LifeThyme Wellness, our acupuncture physicians have advanced training in integrative oncology, acupuncture, and supportive cancer care, helping patients navigate treatment side effects with individualized care.

Point Taken:
My First Acupuncture Treatment
My first acupuncture treatment was in 1995 with Dr. Alejandro Elorriaga, who came to McMaster University while I was pursuing my undergraduate degree in Exercise Science. (He was also my Sports Injuries professor)
At the time, Dr. Elorriaga — originally trained as an MD in Spain — was beginning to develop what would later become the McMaster Contemporary Medical Acupuncture Program, a musculoskeletal and neurofunctional acupuncture approach now commonly studied by many chiropractors and physical therapists, including here in Bermuda. Since he could not practice medicine in Canada, he focused his career on acupuncture education and helped build one of Canada’s best-known contemporary medical acupuncture programs.
Now here’s the funny part…
During my very first treatment, he kept me sitting upright.
A few minutes later… I passed out.
He was shocked.
I was shocked.
Honestly, it probably wasn’t either of our finest moments. 😂
Today I completely understand what happened. Some patients can experience a vasovagal response during treatment — especially if nervous, dehydrated, underfed, overtired, or sitting upright.
Needless to say… I do not treat patients while they are sitting up.
What’s interesting is that over the years, I’ve watched acupuncture evolve into very different branches and educational models. Contemporary Medical Acupuncture programs are primarily focused on musculoskeletal conditions, pain, anatomy, and neurofunctional approaches. Traditional Chinese Medicine acupuncture is a much broader medical system with its own diagnostic framework, treatment principles, and history.
Both use needles.
But they are not the same educational pathway or treatment philosophy.
And yes… after passing out during my first treatment, I still became an acupuncturist.

A really good clinical massage is one of those things you don’t fully understand until you’ve experienced it.
Not a rushed “spa rub.”
Not someone randomly digging into your shoulder blades while you silently regret booking it.
A skilled therapeutic massage can feel like your nervous system finally unclenches. Muscles soften. Breathing changes. Joints move better. Your brain quiets down for the first time all week.
Sometimes people walk in thinking they just have “tight shoulders” and walk out realizing how much stress, tension, fatigue, posture, training, travel, or life they’ve actually been carrying.
The best therapists don’t just massage muscles.
They assess movement, tension patterns, compensation, stress response, and how your body is functioning as a whole.
And yes… sometimes you leave feeling like your body got rebooted.

Week 2: Cancer-Related Fatigue
Cancer-related fatigue is not just “being tired.” It can affect energy, motivation, sleep, mood, concentration, and recovery long after treatment ends.
Research continues to show that acupuncture may help improve fatigue and quality of life in cancer patients and survivors.
A randomized controlled trial published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology found that acupuncture significantly improved cancer-related fatigue in patients after chemotherapy.
At LifeThyme Wellness, our acupuncture physicians have advanced training in integrative oncology, acupuncture, and supportive cancer care. Treatments are individualized and designed to work alongside conventional oncology care.

Point Taken:
Acupuncture/TCM vs Dry Needling/Contemporary Medical Acupuncture.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) acupuncture is a complete medical system with its own diagnostic methods, treatment principles, and thousands of years of clinical development.
Dry needling is a needling technique or modality primarily focused on muscles, trigger points, and pain patterns.
All fully trained acupuncturists are educated in musculoskeletal needling and trigger point techniques, meaning TCM practitioners can incorporate dry needling approaches within their scope and training.
However, learning dry needling does not mean someone is trained in Traditional Chinese Medicine acupuncture.
The difference is not simply the needle.
The difference is the education, diagnostic system, clinical training, and treatment philosophy behind how the needles are used.
At LifeThyme Wellness, our acupuncture physicians are extensively trained in Traditional Chinese Medicine, acupuncture diagnosis, safety standards, and integrative patient care.
Over the next few months, our Point Taken series will explore the research, benefits, history, and modern role of acupuncture in healthcare today.
