Throwback Thursday: How did Breast Cancer Awareness Month actually begin?

You might be surprised to learn that the pink ribbon wasn’t always pink… and Breast Cancer Awareness Month didn’t start the way you might think!

1985. Breast cancer was not something people talked about openly. Awareness was growing, but conversations around the disease were still often quiet.

Then came a partnership between the American Cancer Society and a pharmaceutical company, which helped establish October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month in the United States.

But here’s where the story gets interesting… The ribbon came later.

In 1991, breast cancer survivor Charlotte Haley began handing out small peach-coloured ribbons with cards encouraging people to get involved in breast cancer prevention. The idea caught on.

Then, in 1992, the magazine Self wanted to create a major awareness campaign. After discussions with Haley, the campaign moved forward with a pink ribbon and that little ribbon would go on to become one of the most recognizable symbols of breast cancer awareness around the world.

And look at where we are today. October isn't simply about wearing pink. It's about starting conversations, encouraging screening and early detection, supporting research, remembering those we've lost, celebrating survivors and making sure women don't feel alone. 💗

Every day, we meet women navigating life after breast cancer, women finding a new normal, discovering what works for their bodies and learning to feel comfortable and confident again.

So this October, we're not just thinking about breast cancer. We're thinking about the women behind the statistics.
The mothers.
The daughters.
The sisters.
The friends.
The survivors.
And the women still fighting.

Welcome to October , Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Let's keep the conversation going.

The Amoena Wave is more than a breast prosthesis bra, it brings the bra and prosthesis together in one beautifully integrated design.

A flexible silicone structure is built directly into the bra, gently stabilizing your breast prosthesis while adapting naturally to your movement. This innovative design helps the bra and prosthesis work together rather than feeling like two separate pieces.

The result is a natural, comfortable fit that moves with you, providing gentle support and stability while helping your prosthesis stay beautifully in place.

Part of the Amoena Signature Collection, the Wave combines innovative technology, comfort and thoughtful design to create a truly seamless experience.

💧 MINDFUL MONDAY: HYDRATION IS PART OF CARING FOR YOURSELF 💗

When you’re going through cancer treatment or recovering from surgery, it’s easy to focus on the big things, appointments, medications, healing, rest and getting through the day.

But sometimes, it’s the simple things that matter too. Hydration is one of them. 💧
During cancer treatment and recovery, staying hydrated can be especially important. Some treatments and medications can contribute to nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, dry mouth or reduced appetite, all of which can make it harder to get enough fluids.

💧 Keep water within reach throughout the day and take regular sips.
🍓 If plain water isn't appealing, try adding fruit, cucumber or mint or choose other nourishing, low-sugar fluids you enjoy.
🥒 Remember that hydration isn't only about beverages. Foods like watermelon, berries, oranges, cucumber, soups and yogurt can contribute to your daily intake.
⚡ Think about electrolytes when they're actually needed.
🍲 And don't forget nourishment. If treatment has made eating or drinking difficult, talk with your healthcare team or a registered dietitian rather than trying to push through it alone.

Listen to your body. Persistent dizziness, very dark urine, very little urination, inability to keep fluids down or signs of dehydration are reasons to contact your healthcare team.

Healing doesn't always look like a big accomplishment. Sometimes it simply looks like filling your water bottle and taking another sip. 💗

Small acts of care count. 🌸

🍂 Hello, Fall. 🍂

The first Sunday of fall is a gentle reminder that every season brings its own kind of beauty.
Some seasons are about blooming.
Some are about healing.
Some are about finding your way again.
And some are simply about slowing down and appreciating how far you’ve come.

Whatever season of life you’re in right now, remember this:
You are still beautifully you.
Your body is worthy of love.
Your journey is worthy of respect.
And you never have to lose your femininity, confidence or sense of self because your body has changed.

This fall, may you give yourself permission to embrace where you are, not where you think you should be.

Wear something that makes you feel beautiful.
Do something that makes you smile.
Surround yourself with people who remind you of your strength.

And remember… you are more than your scars, more than your diagnosis, and more than what has changed. You are still YOU. 💗

Wishing you a beautiful, peaceful first Sunday of fall. 🍁

🎀 THROWBACK THURSDAY — SEPTEMBER 24, 1992 🎀

Sometimes a date in history means a little more than you realize…
34 years ago today, on September 24, 1992, an important step was taken in breast cancer awareness. The U.S. Congress officially approved legislation designating October 1992 as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. 🎀

And on that very same day, the New England Journal of Medicine published an article titled “Evaluation of a Palpable Breast Mass,” discussing the importance of evaluating breast lumps and noting that many breast cancers were first discovered as a lump noticed by the woman herself.

Think about that for a moment…September 24, 1992....The beginning of what would become a month recognized around the world for raising awareness about breast cancer.
34 years later, we're still talking.
We're still learning.
We're still supporting.
And we're still here for women. 💗

☀️ BREAKING NEWS: August has entered its final weeks... and it's judging your Summer To-Do List.

Be Honest.... is this you???
☐ Bought sunscreen... still haven't opened it. 😬
☐ Said "We should go to the beach!" approximately 47 times. 🏖️
☐ Ate your body weight in ice cream. (No regrets.) 🍦
☐ Wore jeans because "it looked cloudy"... then immediately questioned every life decision. 👖🔥
☐ Still haven't worn that swimsuit because you're waiting for the "right time." Spoiler: it's August. 😉
☐ Promised yourself you'd sit on a patio every weekend... somehow ended up at Costco instead. 🛒
☐ Took exactly 3,482 photos of sunsets you'll never look at again. 🌅
☐ Told yourself you'd slow down this summer... but somehow you're already seeing Back-to-School signs. 😳

Friendly reminder: You don't need a "bikini body." You don't need perfect weather. You don't need a vacation in the Caribbean.

You just need to stop waiting.

Wear the swimsuit. Jump in the lake. Eat the ice cream. Stay for the sunset.

Because in a few weeks we'll all be saying, "I can't believe summer's over already!" ❄️😂
