Which laser is right for you?

It’s a bigger question than “Which laser is best?”

Laser technology is complicated. Some treatments are ablative, meaning they remove tiny areas of the skin’s surface. Others are non-ablative, heating the skin without removing that surface layer. Different wavelengths and settings reach different depths and address different concerns.

Take MOXI: its 1927 nm wavelength is often used for superficial sun damage, uneven tone and mild texture concerns. But if you’re also concerned about deeper texture or fine lines, we may need a different approach.

That’s where treatments that combine wavelengths, such as Halo Tribrid, can help. They allow us to address concerns at different depths in one treatment session. That can be more efficient, but the recovery still depends on the settings we choose for your skin.

The right plan depends on your skin and anatomy, your goals, your budget, and how much downtime fits your life.

Sun protection after laser isn’t a suggestion. It’s part of the treatment.

Your skin is healing after a laser treatment. Sun exposure during that time can increase the risk of dark marks, prolong redness, and compromise the even-toned result you came in for.

And it doesn’t take a beach day. A walk, a patio, or time in the car can add up.

For the first stage of healing, follow your specific aftercare instructions and keep treated skin out of direct sun. Once your provider says your skin is ready for sunscreen, use broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, reapply when you’re outdoors, and add shade and a wide-brimmed hat.

The laser is what we do in clinic. Protecting the result is what you do afterward. 🤍

Why do I prescribe before a complication happens?

Because the best time to plan for a possible reaction is before we turn on the laser.

Energy based treatments can leave skin red or swollen. Some patients may develop breakouts, cold sores, or changes in pigmentation as they heal. Even a small spot can feel alarming when you weren’t expecting it.

Before treatment, I assess your skin, medical history, and the device we’re using. When your risk calls for it, I send prescriptions in advance and explain exactly when to use them. That might mean preventing a cold sore flare or making sure you have a clear plan if a concern appears.

A prescription isn’t necessary for every patient or every laser treatment. A plan is.

It faces the same sun, weather and daily wear as our face, but rarely gets the same care. We remember our facial sunscreen, tretinoin and other actives. Then our skincare routine stops at the jawline.

Neck skin is thinner, and the tissue beneath it has different support. That can make changes in texture and laxity especially noticeable. It can also be more sensitive to the products and treatments we use on our face.

My approach is gentle and gradual: daily SPF, a topical retinoid such as retinal introduced slowly, microneedling without radiofrequency when appropriate, and injectable biostimulators such as Sculptra for selected patients. I’m cautious with heat based devices on the neck, particularly when preserving the tissue beneath the skin is a priority.
