Edmonton ice arrives before most people plan for it, and balance is a use it or lose it system.
The useful thing about September is that there is time. Balance responds to training, usually within weeks, and the work is unglamorous: standing on one leg while the kettle boils, walking heel to toe, getting up from a chair without using your hands.
If you have had a slip in the past year, or you notice you reach for the rail now when you did not used to, that is worth an assessment before the sidewalks turn.

Post season knee pain is showing up now, and it usually has a pattern.
A summer of building mileage, then a race or a long weekend effort, then pain around or under the knee cap that shows up going down stairs and on descents. Rest helps for a few days, then it comes back at the same distance.
That pattern is a load tolerance problem, not a damage problem. It responds well to a graded plan and specific hip and quad work, and it responds badly to complete rest followed by going straight back to where you left off.

If you have been in a motor vehicle accident in Alberta, there is a piece of this most people do not know.
Section B of your auto insurance covers physiotherapy treatment after a collision, regardless of who was at fault. You do not need to wait for the claim to settle, and in most cases you do not pay out of pocket.
The part that matters: there are timelines. Treatment started early under the Diagnostic and Treatment Protocols generally goes more smoothly than treatment started months later.
If you are unsure what you are covered for, call and ask. It is a short conversation.

Direct billing, explained properly, because the word gets used loosely.
What it means here: we submit to your insurer at the desk and you pay only the remaining portion on the day. No paying the full amount up front and waiting on a reimbursement.
What to bring to the first visit: your benefits information. That is genuinely it.
What is worth checking on your own plan: the number of visits covered per year, and whether the plan year resets December 31 or on your employment anniversary.

Today is World Physiotherapy Day.
A fair amount of what physiotherapists do is not what people picture. Yes, it is sport injuries and sore backs. It is also vestibular work for dizziness, pelvic health, post surgical rehabilitation, balance and falls work with older adults, and breathing and conditioning after illness.
One profession, a lot of lanes. If you have been told your issue is not a physio thing, it may be worth a second opinion.

September is hard on backs. Loose summer schedule, then eight hours of sitting. Get up every half hour. That is the whole tip.

The first two weeks of September are hard on backs.
Summer schedules are loose. September is not. You go from moving through the day to sitting through it, and the low back is usually the first thing to complain.
The fix is boring and it works: get up every half hour. Not a stretch routine, not a new chair. Just changing position more often than you currently do.
If it has not settled in two weeks, that is the point to have it looked at rather than waiting it out.

Putting it off since spring?
Carrying, lifting, stairs. The end of summer is a good moment to stop putting it off.
