WTF Is In Fragrance And Is It harmful!? — Non Toxic Revolution 07/20/2026

When I realized that everything I put onto my skin can absorb into my blood stream, I stopped using drugstore products - perfume, shampoo, lotion, deodorant, laundry soap, bug spray. It has proven to be a big challenge, so I have just been changing one product at a time.
Now I find that "fragrance" is a huge assault to my senses. I can smell laundry soap, dryer sheets, perfumes on other people and I keep my distance as some fragrances will cause an instant headache.

WTF Is In Fragrance And Is It harmful!? — Non Toxic Revolution Go to your bathroom and look at the labels on your lotion, perfume, body wash, shampoo and bathroom spray. Does it say fragrance on the label?

I use at least one of my diffusers everyday and I love trying new blends. This is not my original blend, but it sounds so grounding and I will be trying it soon!

This is good info - i have wondered about this!

Diffuser Tips from Dr. Doug Corrigan --
Why does the smell from my diffuser seem to decrease when I use it for a long time?
There is a phenomenon called olfactory fatigue, and it is a common neural adaptation to reduce the response to prolonged stimuli. Binding of an aromatic molecule to our olfactory receptor causes a series of signaling reactions in our nerve cells which negate further activation of the same receptor.
Extended stimulation of the olfactory receptor causes a negative feedback loop that desensitizes the receptor to further stimulation.
Also- over time, the composition of the essential oil in the diffuser is changing as the the more volatile/smaller molecules evaporate first. Over several hours, the molecules left in the diffuser are the heavier sesquiterpenes and diterpenes, which have a more muted odorant profile than the lighter monoterpenes. So, the smell will change/diminish over time, even without the process of olfactory fatigue.
There is some evidence that smelling coffee beans can reset the olfactory senses. Give that a try.
Also, make sure you’re cleaning the diffuser. If the ultrasonic membrane grows a biofilm over it, the amount of energy transferred to the water to atomize the liquid will decrease as this biofilm grows.

Fun fact: About 22 pounds of rose petals are distilled for every 5-ml bottle of Young Living Rose essential oil produced.
