Self-care for a body that never fully relaxes is not a bubble bath.
It is teaching a nervous system stuck in the on position how to stand down.
When you sit at a desk all day, or carry stress you cannot set down, your muscles do not clock out when you do. They stay switched on, low and constant, until a tight neck and locked shoulders start to feel normal.
That is not something you can candle your way out of. The tension is physical, so the fix has to be too.
Rest and relief are not the same thing.
Therapeutic massage works on the muscle and on the nervous system holding it tight. Research has found that massage lowers cortisol, the stress hormone that keeps your body braced for action. Lower that signal, and the muscle can finally let go.
If your shoulders have forgotten what off feels like, that is worth an hour of real care.

Canada Day in Edmonton lands on a Wednesday this year, right in the middle of everything.
A day off in the middle of the week is a strange and wonderful thing. No weekend chores to catch up on. No Monday to brace for. Just a pause, dropped into the part of the week that usually grinds.
You have been pushing since May. You have been carrying it in your shoulders and your low back.
π’ We are open today, July 1, from 10 to 6.
Spend an hour of your day off putting yourself back together, and head into the back half of the week looser than you started it.
Rest is not a reward for finishing. It is how you keep going.

Cupping looks a little dramatic. The work it does underneath is quietly practical.
The NHPC captured it well: a tension untangler, a circulation booster, and (our favourite) a fascia freer.
That last one is the key. When fascia loosens, the kind of tension that doesn't respond to pressure alone finally starts to let go.
It's one of the modalities our Registered Massage Therapists reach for when the usual approach isn't quite enough.
Curious if it's right for you? Mention it to your therapist at your next visit.

Feeling βtouch starvedβ can have a real impact on our well-being, not just our mood. This article from Everyday Health looks at what touch starvation means, why physical touch matters, and a few healthy ways to cope.
Many people donβt realize how much physical touch can affect overall well-being.
When someone feels βtouch starved,β it can show up as stress, tension, low mood, or simply feeling disconnected.
Massage therapy can be a healthy, restorative way to reconnect with your body and support relaxation. Itβs one more reason regular massage can be an important part of self-care, not just a luxury.
Are You 'Touch Starved'? What It Means and How It Affects Your Health Not getting enough physical touch can contribute to a host of health issues. Coping strategies β including professional massages, asking friends for hugs, and spending time with pets β may help.

Is massage just a luxury? Not when it helps you move freely, sleep better, and feel human again.
Why massage therapy improves everyday quality of life
Therapeutic massage goes beyond relaxation, it's a proven way to manage pain, restore mobility, and lift your mental health. Science shows regular massage can help:
β Reduce chronic pain and break the pain-tension cycle, making movement easier and less exhausting
β Lower anxiety and depression, especially during challenging seasons like winter
β Reset your sleep cycle by boosting serotonin and regulating sleep hormones for deeper, more restorative rest
β Improve posture, flexibility, and circulation, so you feel ready to take on the day
β Ease headaches, muscle tension, and emotional burnout
As one client said, "I came for my neck and I stayed for my sanity."
Massage is more than comfort. It's how you reclaim movement, sleep, calm and joy.

How does a registered massage therapist customize treatment for your specific needs?
Cara Van Veen builds every session around what your body needs right now.
Some days you need deep tissue work for chronic knots.
Other days you need gentle relaxation because stress has you wound tight.
Cara reads your body and adjusts her approach to match.
She specializes in:
β
Deep tissue for chronic tension
β
Swedish massage for relaxation
β
Hot stone therapy for muscle stiffness
β
Sports massage for athletic recovery
β
Prenatal care for pregnancy comfort
β
Therapeutic work for injury rehabilitation
Cara's strength is listening.
She asks about your pain patterns, your stress levels, your goals for the session. Then she uses the techniques that will address those specific issues.
Her clients appreciate the attention to detail. She notices when your shoulder is higher on one side. She feels when your hip flexors are compensating for lower back weakness. She adjusts pressure based on your comfort level.

Bringing back a community favourite β this reminder still hits home. π
Your massage shouldn't cause you pain. Pain does not equal healing, and treatment doesn't need to be uncomfortable in order to be effective.
Communicate with your practitioner if something hurts before or during your session. Don't be shy to ask to adjust the pressure according to your likes and needs. Each person is different, and each session may be different too!
