I had the honour of hosting my Our Hair Is Sacred workshop at the Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation Culture Camp this week. Together, we shared the teachings of our hair and why it is sacred, the stories it carries, and the importance of passing these teachings on to the next generation.

After the teachings, we spent time braiding so many beautiful heads of hair while everyone learned hands on. One of my favourite moments was watching a 6 year old girl braid with confidence, she did a braid in seconds. It felt like the ancestors were guiding her little hands. Moments like that remind me that our culture is alive and our children are carrying them forward.

A huge thank you to Kristal Chowace for standing beside me and helping braid all of those beautiful heads. I couldn’t have done it without you. ❤️

I also loved that everyone went home with their own braiding kit so they can continue practicing, share what they learned, and braid others in their families and communities. That’s how our teachings continue to grow by passing them on.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and trusted us with your hair. Remember that braiding our hair is a connection to our ancestors, our identity, and each other.
