I recently rewatched America Ferrera’s speech from Barbie. Not because of the movie. Because of the truth. The part that stayed with me wasn’t the performance. It was the exhaustion behind the words. The impossible standards. Be confident, but not too confident. Be ambitious, but not intimidating. Speak up, but don’t be difficult. Care deeply, but don’t be emotional. Lead strongly, but stay likable. For many women, leadership can feel like navigating a maze of contradictions. And the higher you climb, the more invisible those expectations become. I’ve coached women who were told to be more assertive. Then later told they were too direct. Women who were praised for their work ethic. Then overlooked for opportunities because they weren’t “visible enough.” Women carrying extraordinary responsibility while quietly questioning whether they were somehow still not enough. The problem isn’t a lack of capability. It’s the weight of constantly managing expectations that often conflict with one another. Real leadership begins when we stop trying to satisfy every version of who others think we should be. And start building the confidence to lead as ourselves. Not perfectly. Not universally liked. Just authentically. Because freedom starts when you realize you were never meant to fit inside someone else’s definition of enough. What part of America Ferrera’s speech resonated most with you?
