As someone who endlessly rewatches Schitt’s Creek, I think I romanticised Rose Apothecary a little too much...

Back in India, I didn’t even know what an apothecary was. The idea that people would walk into a store, read ingredient labels, care about what goes on their skin, ask questions, discover small brands & genuinely enjoy slower beauty… felt very fictional... I kept imagining Kalee in spaces like that.

So this weekend feels a little surreal.

After one year of emails, no replies, samples, rejection, imposter syndrome & me passionately yapping about minimal makeup…

I’m still trying to understand what actually makes someone trust a small makeup brand online.

I’m building Kalee, an indie beauty brand from Toronto, completely bootstrapped, while trying to grow organically here in Canada.

Kalee has genuinely been built on conversations, feedback, constructive criticism, DMs, comments & women telling me honestly what works and what doesn’t.

A lot of you saved the skin elixir smoothie recipe… so I thought maybe it’s time we spoke more about beauty beyond makeup too.

as someone building a skin-first makeup brand, I genuinely believe healthy skin is built through small everyday habits, not just products sitting on top of it.

This is the first of many conversations I want to have around minimalist beauty rituals, skin health, nourishment & feeling good in your own skin.

I’ll never sit here and throw generic beauty tips at you for the sake of content. I only want to share the things that genuinely helped me, the things I’d naturally tell a friend, sister or another woman sitting across from me. Kalee was never meant to be just makeup for me. I want this space to feel thoughtful, honest & genuinely useful.

Sometimes one small thing sets everything else in motion.

A TikTok comment led to a demo at a specialty retail store. The kind I’ve always envisioned Kalee to be at.

It led to sales. It led me to a new neighbourhood where people cared about what was on the label, cared about the ingredients. Two of them asked if Kalee would be available at the store when they run out.

I know this may be a small thing in a world of million dollar brands at Sephora. But this is my story. Building without funds or a business loan, in a new country that is becoming home each passing day. From someone who never thought she could.

None of this would be possible without kind women who spoke about me in rooms I was never present in.Baby steps. All of them...worth it.
