That number on your supplement bottle? It’s not decoration. 🍁
It’s an NPN – Natural Product Number – and it means something specific.
What counts as an NHP in Canada:
* Vitamins and minerals
* Herbal remedies
* Homeopathic medicines
* Traditional medicines (e.g., Chinese herbal medicine)
* Probiotics
* Other natural products (e.g., essential fatty acids)
What the NPN tells you:
* Health Canada reviewed the product before it hit shelves
* Safety, quality, and health claims were assessed
* It was made in a licensed facility
How Canada differs from the US:
* US supplements (DSHEA) = no pre-market approval. The FDA acts after problems arise.
* Canadian NHPs = pre-market review required. You need an NPN before you can legally sell.
The bottom line: No NPN on a supplement sold in Canada? Not legally authorized for sale.
How to verify: Search the NPN on Health Canada’s Licensed Natural Health Products Database (LNHPD).
Save this before your next supplement buy. 💾
