💜 TRICHOTILLOMANIA AWARENESS WEEK 💜

This week, I want to talk about something that doesn’t get nearly enough attention.

Trichotillomania (hair-pulling disorder) is a real condition where a person experiences repeated urges to pull out their own hair. It can result in noticeable hair loss and can also bring feelings of embarrassment, frustration, anxiety or shame. (Cleveland Clinic⁠)

And I think one of the most important things people should know is this:

It isn’t simply “just a bad habit.”

For someone living with trichotillomania, hair loss can be an incredibly personal experience. It can affect confidence, social situations and the way someone feels about themselves.

So if you know someone experiencing this…

💜 Be kind.
💜 Don’t make comments about their hair.
💜 Don’t tell them to “just stop.”
💜 Listen without judgment.
💜 Remember that you may have no idea what they’re dealing with privately.

And to anyone living with trichotillomania:

You are not alone, and there is nothing shameful about asking for help. ❤️

Choosing a wig or topper is so much more than simply picking one off a shelf. ❤️

A consultation gives us time to sit down together, talk about what you’re looking for, try different pieces, explore colours and styles, and find what feels right for you.

Because these appointments can take up to an hour of dedicated one-on-one time, I will now be introducing a $40 consultation fee.

The good news? Your $40 consultation fee will be applied toward the purchase of a wig or topper from From the Neck Up.

My goal is to make sure you feel comfortable, informed and confident in your choice — with no pressure to buy something that isn’t right for you.

💇‍♀️ WIG CARE: NOT ALL WIGS ARE MAINTAINED THE SAME! ✨

One of the questions I get is:

“How do I take care of my wig?”

And the answer depends a LOT on what your wig is made from. 👇

🌿 HUMAN HAIR

Human hair can be treated more like your own hair, but that doesn’t mean it needs no maintenance!

✨ Regular washing and conditioning
✨ Gentle brushing and detangling
✨ Professional styling when needed
✨ Protection from excessive heat and dryness

Human hair can be beautiful and versatile — but it does require more ongoing care.

💫 SYNTHETIC

Synthetic hair is often wonderfully easy to maintain because it’s designed to hold its style.

✨ Less styling required
✨ Let it air dry after washing
✨ Use products specifically made for synthetic hair
✨ Avoid regular heat tools unless the wig is specifically designed for heat

🔥 HEAT-FRIENDLY / HD SYNTHETIC

This type can offer a little more styling flexibility, but heat doesn’t mean unlimited heat!

✨ Use the appropriate temperature
✨ Always use products designed for synthetic hair
✨ Avoid excessive heat and repeated styling
✨ Let the fibres cool completely after styling

And here’s the BIGGEST tip…

❤️ Know what your wig is made of BEFORE you start styling or washing it.

Using the wrong products, too much heat, or the wrong technique can affect the fibres and the way your wig looks.

There’s unpacking, organizing, checking colours, steaming, styling, adjusting, cutting, cleaning up…

…and yes, occasionally standing there looking at a wig and thinking:

“Okay… what are we going to do with you?” 😂

I thought it might be fun to start showing you a little more of what happens behind the scenes here at From the Neck Up.

Because it’s not just about putting a wig on someone’s head.

There’s a lot of little details that go into making sure the final result feels comfortable, natural and right for that person. ❤️
