Question I've been thinking about...

Why is it that when someone asks you for financial help and you respectfully decline, explaining your reasons, they seem to understand at the time...

But later, when they see you buying a car, taking a vacation, or spending money on something you've worked hard and saved for, they suddenly become upset?

Should people stop enjoying the fruits of their hard work simply to avoid offending someone they were unable or unwilling to help financially?

You'll often hear comments like:

"He told me he didn't have money, but I heard he bought a car yesterday."

Does saying, "I can't help," mean you're no longer allowed to spend money on yourself? Or is any money you spend on yourself automatically viewed as money that should have been given to the person who asked for help?

When did declining to provide financial assistance become the same as giving up your right to decide how to use your own money?

Is this a matter of entitlement mindset, unmet expectations, disappointment, a misunderstanding of personal financial priorities or a case of selfishness on the part of the person asking for financial help or the one declining to provide the help?

I'm genuinely interested in hearing different perspectives.
