For years, many of us in the aesthetic industry simply weren’t taught how to confidently and effectively treat melanin-rich skin.
I know I wasn’t.
Much of what I understand today came from intentionally seeking out continuing education focused on skin of colour, learning from experts in the field, and years of clinical experience treating melanin-rich skin.
And that’s exactly why this conversation matters.
Respecting melanin isn’t about being cautious. It’s about being informed.
It’s about understanding how melanin-rich skin responds to inflammation, injury, heat, friction, and treatment, and using that knowledge to create safer, more effective outcomes.
When we understand melanin, we make better treatment decisions.
When we make better treatment decisions, clients experience better outcomes.
Whether you’re a practitioner looking to build confidence or someone navigating your own skin journey, the goal is the same:
✨ Healthier skin.
✨ Better outcomes.
✨ Greater trust in the process.
This is the first of many conversations.
👇🏾 I’d love to hear from you:

A few weeks ago, I attended a skin summit where one of the speakers shared her “10 Skin Commandments.”
Her most important commandment was: Respect Collagen.
And while I absolutely agree, it got me thinking…
As someone who has spent years treating skin, specifically women and men of colour, helping them navigate hyperpigmentation, acne, ingrown hairs, and post-inflammatory pigmentation, there was one thing missing from the conversation:
Respect Melanin.
Because when it comes to skin of colour, understanding collagen alone isn’t enough.
You must understand melanogenesis.
You must understand inflammation.
You must understand the skin barrier.
You must understand how seemingly small decisions can impact pigmentation and outcomes.
Over the years, I’ve had countless conversations with practitioners who are afraid of treating darker skin tones, unsure of their protocols, or frustrated because they’re not getting the results they want.
The problem isn’t that melanin-rich skin is difficult.
The problem is that most of us were never taught how to truly understand it.
So I created my own framework:
The 10 Commandments of Treating Melanin-Rich Skin.
Not as a set of rules, but as guiding principles that shape every treatment decision I make.
Because better outcomes start with better understanding.
And understanding starts with respect.
Swipe through and tell me:
Which commandment resonates with you most?

I’ve never been the esthetician who chooses products based on hype.
In fact, many of the professional lines I carry aren’t the ones you’ll see all over social media—and that’s intentional.
My clients trust me to choose products based on what their skin actually needs, not what’s trending.
One of the reasons I’ve loved EltaDerm for years is its focus on supporting skin health at the foundation. Healthy skin starts with a healthy barrier, and that’s something I talk about every day in clinic and with my students.
Over the years, I’ve used EltaDerm to support clients experiencing barrier impairment from over-exfoliation, skin bleaching, aggressive treatments, and even those who have gone through challenging journeys involving chemotherapy and radiation.
As an esthetician who primarily serves melanin-rich skin, I’m always looking beyond marketing and focusing on ingredients, function, and results.
Because when a product performs exceptionally well for skin of colour, it usually performs exceptionally well for skin, period!!
I like my product lines like I like myself:
Bald-headed.
High-street fashion.
Prescription sunnies.
Bright lips.
Not a pulled-back ponytail, black-and-white chick.
Non-conforming 🤭

Some may say the beauty industry is superficial. From the outside looking in, i think i can understand why one may think that.
Working one on one with women, men and youths, there is a lot of pain here, low self confidence and low self esteem, alot of tears, a lot of feeling unattractive and unpretty. Skin conditions and mental health walk hand in hand.
And so, If you have never struggled with skin issues, made to feel ugly and unattractive because of your acne, dark spots, eczema and other visible skin conditions, you have no business judging another on how they choose to make themselves feel better about themselves.
Normalize being supportive of your family and friend for doing what they need to do, to improve their overall mental and physical well being. For, the mental health issues behind skin conditions is real and rarely talked about.

Booking reopens after July 7th.
I have met so many women with stories like Keke’s — abnormal facial hair growth, weight gain, acne, irregular cycles, and silently struggling to understand what was happening with their bodies.
But beyond the physical symptoms was the emotional weight it carried too… the depression, sadness, insecurity, feeling less attractive, less feminine, less “pretty,” shrinking themselves, hiding, and losing confidence while searching for answers.
When I’d ask if they had PCOS, the response was often, “I got checked, and the doctors said no.”
I’m happy the conversation around PCOS — now called PMOS (Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome) — has evolved because even without ovarian cysts, so many women are finally realizing that their symptoms, hormonal imbalances, and elevated androgen levels are valid and worthy of answers.
This shift in understanding matters because so many women were suffering in silence simply because they didn’t fit the “traditional” definition.
Now, more women may finally get answers earlier, feel less dismissed, and better understand the connection between their hormones, skin, weight, mood, and overall health.
There may not be a cure, but there is power in finally being seen, heard, and properly understood.
How many women have spent years feeling lost, confused, dismissed, and disconnected from themselves while trying to figure out what was happening to their bodies?
