In this episode, we learn how the coffee bean accompanies Captain Bill, a retired American Express sales executive now marine captain, through his firsthand humorous, seemingly haphazard beginnings during the rise of the 90’s excess in the Chicago financial sector to the eventual fall of empires and devastation for many. He spills the tea on the industry, tax loss carryforward ventures, secret stairways, and yacht boardroom parties.

☕️ I allowed the coffee bean to dictate this recording and there is so much background sound. My arms move wildly and after we lost Captain Bill due to tech errors his sound comes back with a crackle. This is what a podcast looks like on coffee for me.

☕️ Captain Bill’s delivery, nonetheless, is like a reset for the parasympathetic nervous system or the ‘rest and relax’ function. We learn about the herbal actions of the coffee bean, along with the consequences of overconsumption.

Foxglove is one of the most beautiful flowers in old folklore, and one of the most dangerous.

Its tall stems of bell-shaped blooms were linked to witches, fairies, hidden places, protection, healing, and death. Even its name carries mystery. Some traditions imagined the flowers as gloves worn by foxes so they could move silently through the woods. Others connected them to the “folk,” an old word for fairy beings.

This gave foxglove a place in fae lore.

Its flowers were said to be worn as tiny gloves, hats, or bells by the hidden folk. Yet disturbing the plant could be dangerous. Like many flowers associated with fairies, it belonged to the boundary between beauty and warning.

Foxglove also carries a powerful history in medicine. Compounds from the plant led to digitalis medicines used to treat certain heart conditions. Yet the plant itself is highly toxic, and consuming it can cause severe illness or death.

This is the contradiction at the heart of foxglove.

It can help the heart.

It can stop the heart.

It can heal.

It can poison.

It can protect.

It can warn.

In witchcraft symbolism, foxglove became a flower of thresholds, spirit work, dangerous knowledge, and respect for the power of plants. It reminds us that natural does not always mean safe, and beautiful does not always mean gentle.

Foxglove is not a flower to treat carelessly.

Its deepest lesson is not about fear.

It is about reverence.

Some plants carry medicine in one hand and death in the other.

In this episode, I recount a slightly cringey childhood story taking place in a noticeable 80’s motif. This is the day that I first met my wolf. I tell my tale making note of the plant allies that accompany me. We learn about the nature of Poplar and Birch trees, and their role in Anishinaabe and Finnish culture.

I briefly point out the multi-dimensional nature of words when they move from, or through, the human body into a narrative, along with the power associated.

Trifolium pratense or Red Clover, which is a part of Stop the Sag Tea, comes with me on this adventure and I cover the medicinal qualities this herb has to offer.
