Mavrik Turnbull Foundation
The Mavrik Turnbull Foundation supports children and families facing serious medical challenges through hockey, hope, and community within British Columbia.
We aim to provide financial help and supports to children and families.
1 year ago today Mavrik was in the middle of radiation. He had 12 sessions to target the remaining area of tumour left behind from chemotherapy and surgery. While the mornings were tough, he was usually feeling well by the afternoon and evenings. So we would try and fit in as much fun as we could. Parks, hockey, playing with friends at Ronald McDonald house. ❤️ Every time I see a hockey card I think of Mavrik. How he couldn’t say certain words but could name 50 hockey players off the top of his head. 🏒

Today from 8AM till sold out we will be in Prince George at the CN Centre helping our friends and now family, Desert Hills Ranch. This crew has helped us and so many of our oncology friends. We had the pleasure of helping them on their journey out west for several pop-ups. These guys work so hard. They care so much. For every community they show up in. They ensure they drop in and drop off produce to seniors homes, play and hangout with oncology children, and spend a lot of time dancing with anybody/everybody. You can’t be in a bad mood watching them and their energy they share. We are launching Mavrik’s foundation website and preparing for our large celebration of life for Mavrik on September 12. We hope our community will show up for Mavrik just how they do for our family with Desert Hills. If you see us tomorrow, please say hi. And remember if you’re waiting in these long lines that these guys drove through fires and road closures to bring produce to our community. ❤️ https://mavrikturnbullfoundation.ca
Come see us today at the BBQ at The Yellow Door Decor in Prince George. 🎗️
Mavrik was 1 year and 10 months old at the time of this video. Just 3 months away from a diagnosis of stage 4, high risk, neuroblastoma. We were preparing for our summer trip to see family down south. Mavrik was heavily into hockey from the time he could walk, so we warned his uncle and auntie to be prepared (and he still dented their floor). Neuroblastoma and other childhood cancer tumours are so hard to catch. Sometimes children don’t even get to start treatment due to the progressed disease. Neuroblastoma treatment has been using the same medications since roughly the 1980’s, they have been refined, paired differently, minor changes made, but other than adding stem cell/BMT, no true breakthrough or significant advances have happened. This is why paediatric cancer needs more funding and research. Because our kids shouldn’t have a survival rate of 60%.

We finally arrived home on Thursday night from Vancouver. Regardless of being away from our home for 21 months straight, home is still home. It’s been an adjustment being here at home without Mavrik. However, we have been focusing on giving Mavrik the best celebration of life and launching his foundation.
With that being said, we have booked the CN Centre for September 12th. The celebration of life will be from 3:30-5:00 and following will be a memorial skate from 5:30-6:30pm (bring your own skates and helmets as there is not rentals).
Mavrik watched his first ever hockey game at the CN Centre. He also had his very first skate on the ice at the CN Centre. When we use to get to Prince George during a break from his treatment, we would go to the rink to walk around or watch practice and when we pulled into the parking lot he would say, “we’re home!”. So it was only fitting for us to celebrate him and his love for hockey at the CN Centre. While the arena holds just under 6,000 seats we are hoping to fill this to honour him ❤️🏒🎗️
Please share with anybody who would like to come and honour Mavrik, maybe learn some more about childhood cancers, find out how you can support the foundation and all the other organizations that have helped us along the way. Through out this process we have learned how many connections Mavrik has through so many people and we are hoping for a LARGE turnout to honour and talk about Mavrik ❤️

Mavrik’s first hockey game at 2 months old and his last hockey game at 3 years & 7 months old. We have lost count of how many hockey games Mavrik had attended between WHL, BCHL, NHL, and PWHL. What we do know, is how appreciative we are to the hockey community that’s surrounded us through Mavrik’s life. Mavrik loved hockey. He loved the players, the atmosphere, the penalties, the hockey fights and most of all probably the mini donuts. This upcoming hockey season will probably be the hardest time for us. But we hope all the players who knew Mavrik will play extra hard for him this season. 🎗️🏒❤️

First off, we just want to say thank you to everyone for reaching out with kind words, putting a stick out for Mavrik, and supporting Mavrik and our family through the 21 months of treatment.
We always had a plan to start some sort of foundation or fundraising group after Mavrik completed treatment. It’s just even more important to us now, to honour him, and our amazing community we have built. As you may have noticed, we have shifted this page from Mavrik’s cancer treatment to the “Mavrik Turnbull Foundation”. During Mavrik’s 21 months of treatment we seen a large gap in services, supports and financial help to children receiving oncology care from the north. While children and families from the lower mainland, interior health region, the island got additional funds, housing, medication funding, and at times other specific services, we did not. While the children and families driving 9-14 hours (even from the Yukon), were getting very minimal. Fighting for the same funding that was broad enough that all families could apply for. Families shouldn’t have to be worried about racking up debt while their children fight for their lives.
Our goal for Mavrik’s foundation is to help families (preference given to northern and PG families to start) with financial help, care packages, and community support. We are aiming to do certain events through out the year to build the funds to help other families. We will have our website up and running sometime this week. On the website, you’ll be able to get more information, apply for funds, and purchase any merch items which will go towards the funds to support others.
We also plan to sponsor one child/youth per year for new hockey equipment that has had oncology related treatment (this will be specific to a child/youth in Prince George and/or local communities while we start up this initiative). We would love to branch this out further as the foundation and fund grows. As we all know hockey was one of the most important parts of Mavrik’s life. It was also a way for all our PG and northern friends to bond, outside at Ronald McDonald House or inside the hospital playing hockey.
While we get our foundation set up as a registered charity (already in the works, it’s being approved as we write this!) We will be collecting donations through Mavrik’s legacy fund in the meantime. This gives others the opportunity to get a tax receipt from their donations while we wait for our foundation to be fully approved and up and running.
We have so many ideas to help grow this foundation and we know our community is behind us. We have goals to have counselling in our community tailored to children and families with medical needs and/or grief and loss, community support groups (even within the north), as well as lots of great hockey ideas. Thank you for supporting our family and please share or donate below. ❤️🎗️🏒
