Equine Metabolic Syndrome - Equine metabolic syndrome (EMS) is a disorder associated with an inability to regulate blood insulin levels (insulin dysregulation).
The role of Insulin in horses - Insulin is a hormone that helps regulate glucose metabolism (this is when glucose is taken from the bloodstream to be used as fuel (e.g. muscle movement) or stored as fat. Problems occur when hormones produced by excessive fat cells prevent insulin from carrying out its vital task, leading to insulin resistance and elevated blood sugar levels. The body responds and starts to compensate by producing more insulin which ends up circulating in the horseβs bloodstream. This is known as hyperinsulinemia.
Signs of EMS in horses
Abnormal fat deposits (pockets/bulges/pads) Typically around the crest, behind the shoulder, and in the hind quarters
Difficulty losing weight
Recurring episodes of acute laminitis
Increased water intake, and urine output
Lethargy
Treatment
Decreased caloric intake (1.5% of equines GOAL weight)
Increased exercise
Preventative measures
The best way to prevent EMS is to ensure your equine stays at a healthy weight
Feel late maturity hay/low sugar hay - soak as needed (1 hour)
Avoid any sweet feeds
Do not turn out obese horse on pasture
Feed small amount of ration balancer to ensure dietary needs are met
