What are Marma Points?
Marma Chikitsa is an Ayurvedic clinical therapeutic system centered on 107 vital anatomical regions of the body — sites associated with muscles, blood vessels, connective structures, bones and joints, where injury or dysfunction can have significant effects.
These are not simply “energy points.”
Marma therapy developed within Ayurveda’s sophisticated traditions of anatomy, surgery and trauma medicine. Today, advanced clinical study of Marma also intersects with musculoskeletal therapy, sports medicine, physical therapy and orthopaedics.
Ayurveda does recognize the relationship of the Marmani to prāṇa and the nāḍīs. But describing Marmani simply as “energy points” — or presenting Marma therapy as an energetic or spiritual healing technique — strips away most of the anatomical, physiological and clinical system that makes it a clinical therapeutic modality in the first place.
Unfortunately, as Ayurveda has entered the Western wellness industry, Marma has increasingly been diluted into “marma facials,” energy-point massage and other wellness treatments offered and even taught by practitioners with relatively little Ayurvedic education and without dedicated specialized clinical training in Marma Chikitsa.
Learning where a series of points are located is not the same as being clinically trained in Marma therapy.
Proper Marma Chikitsa requires substantial Ayurvedic education followed by specialized training in the anatomy, classification, assessment, clinical significance, indications, contraindications and therapeutic application of techniques and specialized oils to the marmani.
At Samya Spa, Marma Chikitsa is not a marketing term or an energetic add-on to a massage.
Our Marma Chikitsa is practised by Registered Advanced Ayurvedic Practitioners with advanced professional education in Ayurveda and dedicated clinical training in Marma therapy.
Prāṇa is part of Marma Chikitsa. Reducing Marma to “energy healing” is not.
