Some people are born into the country they call home. I was given mine.
I was born in Chile, South America, but at just three years old, my family was forced to flee our homeland. We arrived in Canada as political refugees with little more than hope, and this incredible country welcomed us with open arms.
Canada didn’t just give us a place to live it gave us a future.
It gave my family safety when we had none. It gave me an education, endless opportunities, the freedom to dream without limits, and the chance to build a life I never could have imagined. It allowed me to become a registered nurse, an entrepreneur, a mother, and the woman I am today.
Sometimes I wonder what my life would have looked like had we never come here. The truth is, I wouldn’t be the person I am today. Everything I’ve built, every milestone I’ve achieved, every patient I’ve had the privilege of caring for, and every dream I’ve turned into reality began because Canada gave a frightened little three-year-old girl and her family a second chance.
That is something I will never, ever take for granted.
Being Canadian isn’t just about where I live. It’s about the values this country represents compassion, freedom, opportunity, diversity, and hope. Those values changed the trajectory of my life forever.
To the country that welcomed my family when we needed it most, thank you. I will spend the rest of my life trying to give back even a fraction of what Canada has given to me.
Today, I stand here with immense gratitude, overwhelming pride, and a heart full of appreciation.
